Aliso Niguel High School’s surf team competed in State Finals on March 22, 2026. Two students, Brody Large (12) and Trey Fischer (11), took home first place in the team state championship, bringing pride to our campus for their efforts.
The bodyboard team included those two students, and the scoring works through judges who decide whether or not the team moves on to the next round. They can distinguish between the schools by their colorful jerseys with the school name on them.
Trey Fischer and Brody Large took home the first-place spot for the bodyboarding section, which is a division of surfing in which the riders lie on a short and flexible board made of foam using fins to move along. Bodyboarding is very difficult to do and requires a lot of practice to master.
To prepare for these wins, they had extensive practice all year long before the season. Practices take place three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These practices usually range from 6:45 to 8:30, and will continue even after their exemplary performance in the state. However, seniors are allowed to skip some practices after the season ends.
They most frequently visit Salt Creek and Strands Beach leading up to and during their season, but right before state championships, they prepared at Oceanside Harbor Beach for extra intensive practice. They usually practice at Salt Creek, especially at Gravels, where the waves are extra hollow and beneficial for bodyboarders.
Brody Large (12) says, “The practices leading up to state champs were really helpful because the better waves prepared us for our performance. Overall, I think the training was really beneficial to the win.”
This preparation makes the thought that Coaches Werner and Mosier put into their kids evident. Their intensive practice schedule is unusual for a lot of sports, as they take place early in the morning and require students to be at the beaches early. However, it all paid off when Fischer and Large took first.
Coach Mosier, who coaches the team alongside Coach Werner, made sure to express the positive energy the boys bring to the team. The team is a great example of the motto ‘Work hard, play hard’. Their close connections, like those between the two winners, are just a part of what goes into their success.
Coach Mosier, when asked how he would describe the boys, says, “They are really friendly and fun to have around! They love to have fun and just be in the water a lot.”
This shows these two athletes’ love for the sport they are so successful in, showing the passion they carry for this team. Despite going through a lot of hard work, they are able to keep a positive attitude and bring joy to the team.
Even moving on to State Competitions is no small achievement; it is very difficult to get to this point. Although the entire surf team excelled at state, these boys’ performances especially shone, and Aliso is glad to take home yet another win from this amazing sport.
