The track and field season is in full stride and athletes are already demonstrating the dedication, discipline and determination it takes to succeed in one of the most demanding sports on campus. With 16 different events requiring a wide range of skills, the team continues to push forward, fueled by both individual ambition and a shared sense of purpose.
For many athletes, track is about more than just competition, it’s about the environment and the people who make the experience worthwhile.
Abby Hwang (11) says, “I like the competitive competition and being around people.”
This balance of intensity and camaraderie has shaped the team’s atmosphere this season.
Hwang shares, “The team’s energy has been very positive and encouraging. Everyone is committed and pushes each other and stays focused.”
This sense of unity is exactly what Coach Lusar aims to cultivate.
Lusar says, “My goals for the team this season are always centered around both personal success and overall team success.”
This philosophy is reflected in the structure of daily practices.
Lusar shares, “I want every individual athlete to reach their full potential, whether that means jumping higher, running faster or throwing farther, so that the team can succeed as a whole.”
Unlike many sports, track and field requires athletes to specialize while also contributing to the team’s overall performance. Training is carefully designed to meet the demands of each event.
Lusar says, “Our main focus during training includes strength, cardio, endurance, technique and form, along with developing a strong understanding of the sport.”
Lusar explains, “Since there are 16 events in track, training varies depending on the time of year and even the day of the week, because each event requires something different”.
Despite the physical challenges, athletes continue to show up ready to improve.
Hwang says, “One goal I have for the rest of the season is to work hard and keep improving every day by staying consistent and supportive.”
This mindset aligns closely with the program’s larger mission. Coach Lusar stresses that being a student comes first and that success in the classroom is just as important as performance on the track.
Lusar says, “Our goal is to build strong student athletes, students come before athletes.”
She continues, “We want athletes who have motivation, discipline and a strong work ethic, both on the track and in the classroom.”
The demanding nature of track often reveals the mental toughness of its athletes. Long practices, intense workouts and the pressure of competition require resilience and commitment.
Lusar says, “Track is a demanding sport, it requires running, lifting and pushing through discomfort, so it tends to attract athletes who are mentally tough and committed.”
Another key factor in the team’s success is its depth. With so many events, a well-rounded roster is essential.
Lusar shares, “A strong track team requires depth and versatility.”
Lusar says, “With 16 events, you have to build a well-rounded team. If you’re missing even one area, it can hurt your overall performance.”
As the season progresses, athletes are already looking ahead to some of the most important meets.
Hwang shares, “I’m excited for league finals because that’s when the competition is at its peak and when I have fully developed all my events as a whole.”
Hwang says, “I can then see how far I have progressed throughout the season and will hopefully move on to CIF after that.”
With strong leadership, a supportive team environment and and athletes committed to constant improvement, the track and field team is set to make a powerful impact this season. Whether it’s breaking personal records or striving for championship titles, this team is running toward success together.
