The Aliso Niguel High School Girls’ Softball team is continuing their spring season with games and league play. Their current record is 9-10 overall, and 1-0 in league.
In their game on Thursday, Mar. 26th, they had a victory of 7-1 against Mission Viejo High School. This was their very first league game, placing them tied overall with Capistrano Valley High School. Some of their most recent victories include games against Rosary, Pacifica, El Toro and Redondo Union.
The team practices after school every day in order to prepare for their games and be strong competitors. One of the team captains, Sloan Lorenzo (12), said, “We have a really tough schedule, but we have come together to play really solid games together.”
Lorenzo adds, “More importantly, we get along so well, and I think that will result in our current and future success.” Chemistry is arguably one of the most essential pieces towards a team’s potential. By getting meals together and going to the beach, the girls have become an incredibly close-knit team.
Earlier in their season, the Wolverines played against Mater Dei, one of the most athletically competitive high schools in the state. With their victory of 7-4, they were able to build even more confidence towards achieving their goals.
Some players this year have even been able to hit incredible milestones. Amanda Elkins (10), one of their players, recently hit 100 career strikeouts. Hitting this in only her sophomore year displays the strong skill set within the Aliso Niguel Girls’ Softball team.
Elkins says, “I’m most proud of how much love we have for each other. I think it really helps us get through adversity, and it’s basically just ride or die with each other.”
All of the girls on the team have a mutual respect and love for one another, and as Elkins says, it is what guides them through difficult times. During the start of the season, they were playing incredibly difficult teams and rarely pulled through victories. Their bonds with one another are what held them together and kept them going.
Their next two games are league, against Tesoro and San Clemente, where they plan to battle and hold onto their lead. The team’s high morale from their recent victories and success will guide them to carry it on throughout the season.
Many of the athletes on the team have committed to four-year universities for softball. Tessa Cowsill (12) has committed to Brigham Young University to continue her softball career at the Division 1 level. Evie Scherffies (12) has committed to the University of Chicago, where she plans to major in Biochemistry while also pursuing her passion for softball at the Division 3 level. Charlotte Giler (12) is committed to pitch at Columbia University, an Ivy League school playing in Division 1.
The expansive skillset among these girls, with some planning to utilize it following graduation, shows that their hard work on and off the field has paid off.
Lorenzo also says, “I want my teammates to know what they are going to get from me every day, constantly encouraging them, working hard, and having a positive attitude.” Strong leadership like Lorenzo’s pushes forward high levels of success from this team.
As the Aliso Niguel Girls’ Softball season continues, fans and players alike hold high hopes for a successful record and a continuation of their success.
