The global popstars and international sensations BTS are back, after four years of various solo projects, military service and more, with their newest studio album titled “ARIRANG” released on March 20. The album’s debut streaming day achieved over 110 million streams worldwide making it the biggest K-pop debut streaming day of all time.
This is the groups ninth studio album after their last album “Proof” which was released in 2022. The album title “ARIRANG” is the name of a traditional Korean folk song, often referred to as South Korea’s unofficial national anthem. The song has over 3,600 variations and is meant to represent love, longing and pleasure.
The album has fourteen tracks that explore various sounds such as hip-hop, synth, pop and house. The group members themselves have described the album as a new and matured side of the group; it is meant to represent the groups personal experiences and feelings of being in the music industry for the past thirteen years.
Khloe Iskandar (10) said “I really enjoyed this album. I would describe it as a matured version of their first album ‘Dark and Wild,’ because I felt as if I heard many similarities in the production of both albums/”
“ARIRANG” has been credited with many familiar western producers in the music industry, such as Diplo, Mike Will Madeit and Kevin Parker. Diplo has produced hits such as “Lean On” by Major Lazer. Mike Will Madeit is recognized in the hip-hop industry for producing “HUMBLE” by Kendrick Lamar, and Kevin Parker a member of Tame Impala, who has produced tracks such as “The Less I Know the Better” and “Let It Happen.”
“ARIRANG” has already broke numerous records worldwide, and their title track “Swim” is projected to chart #1 on the Billboard Hot 100s. This would mark the groups seventh number-one track on the charts and their seventh number-one album, making them the only group act to achieve this in the past decade.
The group held a one night only show following the release of their album in Gwanghwamun Square in the heart of Seoul to perform their brand new songs for the first time. Over 150,000 people attended the show, and it was also streamed on Netflix, garnering over 18.5 million live views. The replay of the show, which was released the following day, became the number one movie on Netflix in 110 countries worldwide.
BTS is also set to go on a record breaking tour from this April to late 2027. It was named as the biggest tour of 2026, with over 82 dates so far covering five continents and 23 countries.
Hannah Oh (10) shares how excited she is to attend their shows in Los Angeles, stating, “It will be the first time I attend one of their concerts with all seven members present.”
Her excitement is shared among many fans as all seven members have been doing separate solo projects for the past four years due to them serving their mandatory military service. RM released “Indigo” as his first studio album, as well as Jungkook who released “Golden.” The other members Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin and V all released EP’s and singles which also broke various records worldwide.
The group also released an hour-long documentary to show fans the process of making “ARIRANG”; it was released on March 27.
