The Aliso Niguel Boys Track Team has kicked off its season with a variety of running activities for students to choose from. The large track team has 111 students, containing students in sprints, jumps, distance, pole vault, discus, shot put and high jump. Led by Coach Werner and other various assistant coaches.
So far, there have been 4 track meets in the season. The first meet was the Eagle Invitational, which took place at Santa Margarita Catholic School. Aliso Niguel’s boys’ team overall took 1st place, with 35 points. The girls’ team took second place at this meet to Esperanza High School and got 28.5 points.
The other events the team has had so far are the John/Myers Downey Relays, Tara Davis Invitational, Aliso Niguel vs. Capo Valley and John Godina’s Thrower Invitational. The meet between Aliso Niguel and Capo Valley was a home game, where students can be admitted for no cost into meets. This allows students to support their peers and encourage them to do their best in the events.
This exciting event contained an abundance of good options, such as Acai Republic and taco trucks. Students were encouraged to cheer on their friends because of all the good food they were able to eat. Although the racing itself is exciting, many students remarked that there was a lot of standing around at times when they were not doing an event.
The track members also thought that the Capo team was very nice, saying they displayed excellent sportsmanship out on the field. The students were glad to finally have a meet at their very own school.
Sam Tajik (10), a member of the track and field team, said, “I liked this meet a lot better than the other ones. They had a lot of good food, and it was nice for all my friends to come cheer me on since it was on our home track. For me, I think the home meets are a lot better because I feel more comfortable in a place that I know. I feel like it made me perform way better than I might have at the other meets.”
There are 18 meets still to come, which seems like a lot, but the season moves very fast, especially towards the end of the school year.
Nicholas Wood (11) says, “When I first started track, I saw the schedule and thought the season was so long, but after a while, I realized how much shorter it is than it seems. It makes you really grateful for all the time that you put into the sport, and when you look back on your season, it feels so weird.”
Overall, the track team has had an exciting and eventful season so far as they zoom towards the end of the year. Time is flying by for the students as they begin to work harder and harder towards their sports. Although the training is rigorous, their hard work has been shown to pay off with all of the wins they are taking home.
