The Aliso Niguel girls wrestling team has shown how powerful they are this season. They won the league title thanks to strong performances in their duels, steady improvement, and team unity.
The Wolverines defeated Dana Hills on Dec. 3, El Toro on Dec. 9, San Clemente on Jan. 6, and Trabuco Hills on Nov. 18. Each victory played an important role in securing their place at the top of the league standings. The team showed strength in every weight class, proving they could rely on more than just a few wrestlers to earn points.
One of the key contributors was senior Josephine Rettich, who reached the final round in multiple tournaments this season and brought in valuable points for the team.
“Making it to the final round really helped our team because I was able to bring in a lot of points,” Rettich said. “I knew those points could make a difference in league.”
The Wolverines also competed in several major tournaments throughout the season. One highlight was the Goddess of Olympia Tournament, a two-day overnight event that challenged the team both physically and mentally. Another important event was the Norwalk Tournament, where junior varsity wrestlers had the chance to compete at the varsity level for the first time. This experience helped younger athletes gain confidence and better understand the intensity of higher-level competition.
Rettich shared that the team felt confident going into many of these events.
“It honestly wasn’t that difficult because we have such a strong lineup compared to other schools in the area,” she said.
Even with their success, Rettich believes that support is what truly keeps the team strong. “Supporting your team is really important,” she said. “Even when you can’t get the results you want, being there for your teammates is the best thing you can do.”
The league championship reflects more than just wins and medals. It represents the hard work put in during practices, the effort shown during long tournaments, and the commitment each wrestler made to the team. From varsity leaders to JV athletes stepping into bigger roles, every member helped make this season special.
With their league title secured, the Aliso Niguel girls wrestling team has proven that dedication, confidence, and teamwork can lead to success.
