Although the official season has yet to begin, the Aliso Niguel girls Track and Field team has been actively preparing during the offseason in hopes of setting the stage for a strong spring. The months before competition are often overlooked, but for the team, this period has been essential for building the endurance and strength that the athletes need to succeed.
Throughout the offseason, athletes focus on conditioning and maintaining consistency in their training. Distance runners worked on base mileage and aerobic endurance, while sprinters concentrated on speed mechanics and form. Field athletes dedicated time to refining technique in events such as long jump and shot put.
Rather than pushing at full intensity, workouts emphasized gradual improvement to prevent injuries and allow athletes to progress safely.
For many athletes, the offseason is a great time for personal growth and reflection. Returning team members looked back on last season to identify areas for improvement, whether that meant increasing stamina or improving form, the goal is always to set new performance standards. Newer athletes used this time to adjust to the expectations of a high school track program and familiarize themselves with the discipline required for the sport.
Yoali Salome (10), a first year track athlete says, “Offseason is important to prepare you for the actual season, but I think it is also important to not overwork yourself … so that you can do [your] best at every meet and not burn yourself out early in the season.”
In addition to physical preparation, the offseason also helped foster team chemistry. Informal training sessions and shared workouts allowed athletes from different event groups to connect, creating a supportive environment before the pressure of competition begins. Building these relationships early can play a key role in motivating athletes throughout the long and demanding season.
Head Coach Lusar emphasizes the importance of patience and dedication during the offseason, reminding athletes that success is built long before the first meet. By focusing on proper conditioning and recovery, the coaching staff aims to ensure that athletes would enter the season both healthy and ready to compete. This approach highlights the idea that progress in track and field is gradual and requires commitment over time.
The offseason has also been an opportunity for athletes to set both individual and team goals. Some aim to achieve personal records, others hope to qualify for league finals, and many are motivated by the desire to contribute to the team’s overall success. These goals help provide direction and purpose as the season approaches.
Hilary Queen (10), who actively participated in off season practices says, “Off season helps me prepare for track season by helping me train to get faster, and learn new techniques to be better in season. I’ll also add that off season helps me to build strength and muscle for season and helps me to reach my goals early in season.”
As the start of the spring season comes closer, excitement continues to build among the athletes. While the team has yet to compete, the dedication shown during the offseason reflects a strong work ethic and a desire to improve.
With months of preparation behind them, the Aliso Niguel girls track and field team looks forward to translating their offseason efforts into success on the track and in the field.
