After a successful pre-season the Aliso Niguel Girls Wrestling Team is off to a great start to their season. They have 14 weight classes ranging from 100 to 170 pounds and have built a strong team with resilient wrestlers. Their determination and hard work has paid off greatly in recent matches and it shows that they are set up for their most powerful season yet.
This season the girls have gone up against fierce competition at the All Star Duels, Lady Big Kat, Trabuco Duels and the Glendora Throwdown. Many of the girls competing in these duels are even ranked in the top five in all of Orange County, and as a whole the Varsity girls team is ranked in the top 30 in all of California and earning these achievements is no small accomplishment.
These tournaments contain fierce competition and the girls competing are no stranger to putting up a good fight. Their biggest accomplishment of the season came at the Glendora throwdown, where the Wolverines placed first overall. That win gave the girls a huge confidence boost heading into the tougher parts of the season. Some wrestlers even earned individual medals and added even more excitement to the evening and showed what a well-rounded team they are.
A huge part of their success comes from the leadership of their team captains: Chanel Corredor, Erika Montes, Kainani Libunao, Valeria Alonso and Eliana Trevino. This group helped bring the team together, support newer wrestlers, run warmups, organize team bonding events and make sure everyone stays focused during long tournament days.
Corredor (12) shared how much this season means to her, saying, “I’m very proud of the girls this season and how much they’re progressing.”
She added that seeing everyone improve week after week has been one of the most rewarding parts of the year. Chanel says watching the team develop into a top-ranked squad is especially meaningful for her.
Montes (12) also talked about what being a captain feels like to her. “I’m honored to be a captain because I feel like I’m a role model for the younger girls,” she said. “I just want to help them become the best wrestlers they can be.”
The Wolverines are coached by head coach Rich Trevino and assistant coaches Mark Pascua and Allura Wyatt, who have all played a big role in helping the team prepare, stay focused and continue improving throughout the season.
One of the Wolverines early season highlights was senior night match against Dana Hills. With a loud and supportive home crowd cheering them on the girls dominated the match winning 76-6. This made for a memorable night for the seniors knowing that their hard work is already paying off.
With everything they have accomplished so far the Aliso Niguel Girls Wrestling Team is shaping up to have their best season yet. The girls are ready for more wins and are going to do everything in their power to make sure that becomes a reality.
