The Aliso Niguel High School Surf Team concluded their 2025 season on Nov. 12 at Trestles Beach and Nov. 19 Salt Creek Beach. Their hard work was reflected by the amazing results, including three first placer finishes and six placers overall. On both fronts, Aliso gave their best efforts and exemplified the high level of athleticism at Aliso Niguel.
Shortboard qualifiers included Ryder DeMichele (9), Guarin Bruni (12), Ezekiel ‘Zeke’ Gonzalez (12), Porter Ellsworth (12) Luke Schiber (12) and West Maxon (12), with Bruni finishing in sixth. Senior captain Zeke Gonzalez placed fifth in longboard and Drew Gerlach (12).
The Surf Team fosters a positive environment as captains and non-captains alike push each other toward greatness. Gonzalez is instrumental in the success of the team, not only making himself work to his limit but motivating other athletes of the Surf Team to their highest potential.
“As an athlete and the captain of the surf team I have helped guide the team into competitions and help them strategize the best positions. Training in the off season is surfing every other day constantly no matter the conditions. We always practice and always give it our all. My driving force is my love for the ocean and the thrill I get from winning competitions.” Gonzalez said.
Maddy Chao (12) scored a nine out of 10 on a wave in the shortboard division, giving her the first place win. At Trestles last week, Chao also scored first in the longboard division, dominating the competition and putting all her hard work for her last season to the test.
“Since surfing was a hobby before doing it as a sport, it’s always been something that I enjoy doing and being on the team motivates me to do my best.” Chao stated.
Freshman Ryder DeMichele also made an impact at League Finals; he did not lose a league SB heat until he took 2nd place in the Semi Finals at Salt Creek Beach. In finals he secured first place in SB by 0.5 points. As an underclassman, he has shown a lot of potential and is an invaluable member of the Aliso Niguel High School Surf Team.
Aside from competing, athletes have strong friendships with one another contributing to a healthy team dynamic.
“My favorite part about being on the Surf Team is the community that we have built and our shared love for the ocean.” Gonzalez said.
The Surf Team represented Aliso Niguel High School well with their outstanding performances and hard work. The positive team environment and motivation from driven captains helped the team go far in League Finals.
The success of the 2025 Aliso Niguel Surf Team set the precedent for off season training, future athletes of the team and the dedication of the seniors leaves a lasting impact for a bright future for the program.
