As the weather cools down and the fall season comes to an end, excitement is heating up around Aliso Niguel High School for the start of winter sports. This season, the Wolverines will be represented across the court, pool and field with boys and girls basketball, girls water polo and boys and girls soccer all set to kick off their schedules.
The anticipation is high among athletes and coaches as they prepare for another competitive season filled with determination, teamwork and pride.
The boys basketball team is entering the season with renewed energy and focus. After months of preparation, players are eager to see their hard work pay off in tournaments and league play.
Sophomore guard Aarav Modi (10) shared his excitement about what lies ahead this winter.
“I’m most excited for our tournaments because they seem like a fun way to compete and hopefully take home some hardware. Laguna Hills and Mater Dei are the two major tournaments I am looking forward to,” Modi said.
The team has been working on improving both offensive coordination and defensive intensity, with a shared goal of performing strongly against some of the toughest schools in Orange County. Modi added that his goals for the season go beyond just winning games.
“My number one goal is for our team to hopefully win both of the major tournaments. As an individual, I hope to elevate my game and become a better defender,” he said.
On the girls basketball side, the team is also setting its sights high. With several returning players and new talent joining the roster, the Lady Wolverines are focused on developing chemistry and consistency.
They’ve been training hard in the preseason, with an emphasis on teamwork and communication on the court. Their ultimate goal: to make a strong run in league play and push toward the CIF playoffs.
Meanwhile, in the pool, the girls water polo team is gearing up for another intense season. Known for their resilience and grit, the team has been preparing with daily practices emphasizing endurance, strategy and defense.
Their schedule features several key matches that could determine their league standing early on. With returning upperclassmen leading the way, the Wolverines hope to build upon last season’s success and dominate in close, physical games.
Out on the field, the boys soccer team, led by Head Coach Daniel Pask and assistant coaches Alek Cucuk, Ryan Mann, Alex Martinez and Steven Fagundes, has been training hard for another competitive year. After reaching the second round of CIF last season, the team is more motivated than ever to push even further. With a solid mix of returning players and new faces, they’re confident in their chemistry and drive.
“We’re focused and ready to compete,” one player shared, reflecting the team’s determination to make this season one to remember.
The girls soccer team is also looking forward to the season ahead under the guidance of Coach Sean Melendez and statistician Laurel Thurman.
After making it to the first round of CIF last year, the players are aiming to advance even further. They’ve been putting in the work both on and off the field, focusing on teamwork, communication and consistency.
All Aliso winter sports teams share the same mission: to represent the school with pride, play with heart and make this season their best yet. With fans ready to fill the stands and cheer them on, winter sports at Aliso Niguel are shaping up to be full of excitement and Wolverine spirit.
