Girls Wrestling is currently battling it out through the season and setting its sights on CIF. Currently, they are in second place behind Eleanor Roosevelt High School located in Eastvale, near Corona, in CIF rankings, with an overall record of 7-3.
Like most sports, the commitment goes beyond the winter wrestling season, training begins over the course of the summer to focus on technique and strength to mitigate injuries throughout the season. Unfortunately, injuries have impacted league match-ups, though the team has recovered and is ready for playoffs. Coach Trevino has built the program so athletes spend the off-season ironing out their mistakes and learning. Wins and medals are just the byproduct of early season matches, but Coach Trevino spends his time focused on the details that play out on the mat. This is what delivers a winning program.
Coach Trevino says, “I want his team dialed in and peak at the right time. That’s why the girls are always in shape to grind for 8 minutes if we have to. (Regulation match is 6 minutes overtime and bumps it to 8 minutes.)”
The Wolverines have currently competed in three league matches. These games have been against the San Clemente Tritons, El Toro Chargers, and the Trabuco Hills Stallions. They played against the Tritons on Jan. 7. Unfortunately, the Wolverines lost 22-54 in three rounds but the Wolverines are confident they could beat them if they were to play each other in a CIF rematch because some of their best players were injured during the match. On Jan. 14 the Girls took on the Chargers and lost 37-42 due to some unexpected losses in the third period. Luckily, the Wolverines will take on the Chargers again on Jan. 25 and are going to be prepared at all times during the match. The Wolverines crushed the Mustangs on Dec. 10 with a score of 48-24 and are excited to play them again in CIF duals.
Varsity Player, Hannah Aossey (11) says, “We have had our good and not so good matches but we are ready for what the rest of the league and CIF has for us.”
Not only does the Girls’ Wrestling team do great in team matches but also work great independently. This year, we have two wrestlers ranked in the top 15 of the masters tournament in the CIF Southern Section. Juniors, Eliana Trevino, (ranked 14th) and Valeria Alonso, (ranked 15th) are two elite athletes that rank as one of the best for their respective weight classes.
Coach Trevino has high expectations for the team as they continue to put in the hard work and guarantees many of his athletes competing at the CIF tournament starting in a little over a week.
When competing in CIF Individuals, Coach Trevino says, “As for individual CIF I should have most of my team advance to the CIF tournament and if we stick to the plan I should have 7 or 8 at the Masters meet. My girls know I tell the truth so realistically I should take 5 to the state tournament. Please don’t mistake this for cockiness or not being humble. I just know the work my girls put in and I know their individual ability.”
