The Aliso Niguel High School’s Coloring Club brings students together twice a month in room 504 to help make handmade cards for younger and older students. This club meets every second Friday of the month under the club president Tiger Lilee Flores and creates handmade cards which focus on creativity and kindness through the coloring process.
Members design and color cards during meetings which are then given to other students. The club also provides printed color pages for members during meetings which makes it easier for students to participate regardless of their artistic ability. Tiger Lilee Flores (11) personal experiences helped inspire the creation of the club along with its purpose.
Flores says, “I’ve always found coloring relaxing and it was something my grandmother and I bonded over. I remember going to her house and every time I’d tell her about something stressful that happened in my day, we’d always sit together and color.”
The many experiences in Flores’ life helped continue to shape her vision for the club.
“I actually moved in with her halfway through my freshman year. And we continued to color together, up until her last days, which motivated me to spread the joy I found in coloring with others. Now, my friends and I just find fun pictures we’re interested in coloring and bring them to Freedom Village to color with other lonely elders,” says Flores
In addition to in-person meetings, the club also maintains an online presence through its Instagram account, @coloringclubanhs, in which post about upcoming meetings and volunteering opportunities Anyone interested can come to the events and help contribute to the creation of cards and artwork. The main impact of the club is to improve students’ well-being and perspective on others through interactions.
“I hope members of the Coloring Club can use this fun and creative activity to deal with the stress of high school and hopefully realize how impactful these simple interactions are with our elders.”
The coloring club at Aliso Niguel allows for the opportunity to relax and connect with the community through the hobby of coloring.
