The Aliso Niguel Theater Company has elections each year to determine the new artistic and managing directors for the upcoming school year. These leaders of the company have the tremendous responsibility of setting the stage for the new and exciting school year.
Everyone involved in the company can vote for one managing director and one artistic director if they are enrolled in at least one class. Theater company members began voting on March 13, 2026 and the decisions were released March 16.
The candidates for artistic director included Nolan Dewees (11) and Abby Manzella (11). The candidates for managing director were Jackson Cravens (11) and Shiley Moeinzadeh (11). Nolan Dewees was chosen for artistic director and Shiley was chosen for managing director.
Emma Esparza (11) says “I’m very happy about the news and I understand that all of the candidates were great choices. I think that this process of voting brings people together and lets each individual have a voice for themselves.”
Voting for responsible leaders prepares young adults to take initiative in their own lives and make decisions that will affect everyone in the educational community, which includes both students and teachers.
It’s difficult for teenagers to feel understood, especially about things in the school system that have impacts on their own lives, but elections in schools allow all students to feel included, even when they feel like their voices are not always heard.
Time after time, the ANTC is empowered because of the trust that is instilled in each and every one of their members. In theater, students are able to have various opportunities for learning about amazing life skills, like teamwork and leadership.
Some particular shows are actually directed by students and this alone creates a wonderful foundation for those who aspire to pursue creative careers in their future. Students put so much time into the company and their efforts never unnoticed, but instead appreciated by the local community.
Marina Miyata (11) says “I feel that the artistic and managing directors of the theatre company are very important to the ANTC. They are the ones who represent and unify the company as well as oversee important events and aims to improve the company.
I think that the overall process of the elections are done well. Having the nominees be approved is important to making sure that people who are fit for the job are elected, and we each put in a vote so that elections are fair for everyone. I think that participating in this election will help to continue the success of the company.
I think that participating in this election will help to continue the success of the company. We are the students who are contributing to electing someone who we believe is the best fit for the whole of the company.”
When students first come to high school, they are given the chance to feel a sense of belonging. The ANTC feels like a second home for Emma Esparza, for Marina Miyata, and for so many others.
