The Aliso Niguel High School hosted its annual Area concert at 6 p.m. in the school’s big gym. The concert included elementary, middle and high school students from the Capistrano Unified School District, featuring collaborative orchestra and band performances for families and friends to enjoy for free.
The first segment of the orchestra half of the concert commenced at 6:08 p.m. with the elementary students performing “We Will Rock You” and other songs. The elementary students’ part ended at 6:14 which then led to the middle school part
The assistant director of orchestra, Whitney Luu (11) introduced the students in the regular orchestra at Duan Juan Avila Middle School who were in the far right corner to perform. From 6:14 to 6:20, the students in the regular orchestra played two songs for the crowd, one of which included drums.
At 6:20, the students from Aliso Viejo Middle School who were set up at the far left corner performed two songs for the audience.
From 6:26 to 6:32 p.m., the DJAMS advanced orchestra performed classical pieces like that of the Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5”
Later between 6:34 and 6:52 p.m. the synthonic orchestra, directed by Richard John played their first song “Pirates of the Caribbean”, using many diverse instruments such as saxophone, drums, metal triangle, xylophone, trumpet, trombone and the clarinet. The second song, “The Prince of Egypt” directed by Mr. Chen included many other instruments like the piano.
Ayame Hubert (12), a trumpet player in jazz band states, “We have been preparing since the beginning of the semester, so just about over a month. Personally, my favorite piece was Prince of Egypt—it took me back to when we first played it last year!”
The band segment began at 7:38 p.m. featuring the elementary school band students until 7:50 p.m, with instruments such as clarinet, flute, trombone, saxophone and trumpet. The students played pieces including, “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” Barney the Dinosaur theme song and “When the Saints Go Marching In”.
The DJAMs regular band played from 8:01 to 8:06 p.m., the AVMS band played from 8:07 to 8:13 p.m. Soon the advanced DJAMs band played from 8:13 to 8:20 p.m..
At 8:20 to 8:33, the jazz band performed two songs, including the use of an electric guitar.
The synthonic orchestra played Pirates of the Caribbean and Prince of Egypt once more from 8:33 to 8:52 and luckily this time the projector with the clips of Prince of Egypt was working.
The concert ended at 8:54 p.m. with all the various bands performing together one last song.
The official school Instagram account, @alisoniguel_hs_offical, describes the event as, “A full musical journey in one night—from elementary to middle to high school. This is what arts education looks like!”
