The Psalm 100 club at Aliso Niguel High School invites students to join in singing worship music and helping to build faith together. The club meets monthly in room 1004, the school choir room. Under the leadership of President Payton Gray (11), Vice President Sabrina Rzepka (11), and Secretary Camila Abarca (12), the group allows students of all experience levels to participate in praising the Lord and singing.
The club’s mission and name are related to the Bible verse Psalm 100 which states, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands”, which emphasizes the gratitude and recognition of the Lord’s sovereignty. The verse also encourages believers to serve the Lord with gladness, using music to help unify them and open connections to Christ for those who have yet to do so and wish to.
Rzepka says, “My main responsibilities are being supportive, singing/participating, and running the club if Payton is not there at that meeting. Sometimes I give song recommendations for the next meeting as well.”
In addition to helping run the club meetings and contributing to the songs selected for each meeting, Sabrina also focuses on teaching others by helping to support other members develop their spiritual connections and music skills.
“I was also pretty new in my relationship with Christ, but Payton helped me grow my relationship, and I hope we can do the same for others. I hope that the club grows and continues in the future of the school, hopefully with new members that may or may not have a relationship with Christ yet,” says Rzepka.
Payton says, “I personally seek worship at my church at the Rock church in Mission Viejo. So I wanted to kind of just bring what I do at that church here, because I know there are many people in the same religious community at Aliso Niguel that would love to just sing.”
At the club meetings, Payton also encourages members to share song requests as she wishes to create a welcoming environment that focuses on the wants of the community.
“We let people request music, we have the remind up, and we let them request it. And sometimes we’ll say, like, a couple of days prior. If they ever do, we always play them. We put their song requests above our own. Personally, I find it really hard to just continue growing in my faith while I’m at school because there are so many different things happening at school and I just want to make that happen to anybody who wants to also continue to grow in their faith. I just want people to have that space where they can just feel welcomed,” says Gray.
The Psalm 100 club maintains an active presence on social media by using their Instagram account, @anhspsalm100 to connect with students and share updates.
Psalm 100 is one of the many unique clubs at ANHS that not only focuses on benefiting the community but also encourages the youth to focus on their faith even while at school.
