On Jan. 7, 2026, in south Minneapolis, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good.
Reports say that she was found to be unresponsive in her vehicle with at least three gunshot wounds to the head, arm and chest. While paramedics attempted to resuscitate her, she was officially pronounced dead at the hospital around 10:30 a.m.
Good’s death has caused an increased number of anti-ICE protests across Minneapolis
Videos have been circulating on the internet of the assault. Viewers can see Good attempting to dive away from the ICE agents before being shot in her vehicle.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey publicly stated that “The notion that this was domestic terrorism … is positively ridiculous. What we saw was an escalation that did not need to happen.”
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken primary control of the investigation regarding Good. This results in the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension being barred from both evidence and interviews.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was quoted as saying, “No one is above the law, that includes federal law enforcement officers operating in our communities.”
Both ICE and the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that what Renee Good had done was “domestic terrorism.” Both believe that the agent had acted in self-defence.
Vice President JD Vance says, “What you see is what you get in this case … The officer was clearly acting in self-defense.”
ICE has not officially released the name of the officer involved due to safety concerns, but the internet speculates Johnathan Ross.
In response to the shooting, a federal judge has issued an order restricting ICE’s conduct towards legal observers and protesters in Minnesota.
Good’s death has caused the spread of protests and events under the rising “ICE Out for Good” movement. More than 1,000 planned protests have been calling for justice.
Celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo, Jean Smart, Wanda Sykes and Ariana Grande were seen wearing pins that said “Be Good” on the Golden Globes red carpet and inside the event. The event was held just five days after Good’s death, on Jan. 12, 2026.
When asked about his pin, Mark Ruffalo said, “This is for the people in the United States who are terrorized and scared today. I know I’m one of them. I love this country, and what I’m seeing here happening is not America.”
The goal of many movements like “Be Good” and “ICE Out for Good” is to remove ICE from communities, as well as accountability for the actions taken by ICE agents all across the country. Protests in large urban centers, such as D.C., Boston, New York, Seattle and Philadelphia have been photographed with signs that read Justice for “Renee Good” and chants like “ICE out Now.”
Federal officials argue that agents are simply trained to respond to perceived threats, maintaining that the agent who shot Good was acting according to federal training and guidelines.
Vance has also promised “absolute immunity … because [the agent’s] a federal agent and was doing his job.”
