The Aliso Niguel girls wrestling team has been putting together an impressive season, showing a ton of improvement, energy and determination across every match and tournament they’ve competed in so far.
With 14 weight classes ranging from 100 to 170 pounds, the team has built a strong lineup that keeps proving itself meet after meet. A lot of the girls have been training very hard during pre-season, and that extra work is clearly showing in the way they wrestle.
This season, the girls have gone up against tough competition at events like the All Star Duels, Lady Big Kat, Trabuco Duels and the Glendora Throwdown. They’ve made their presence known too; many of the wrestlers are ranked in the top five in Orange County, and as a team they’re currently ranked in the top 30 in the entire state. These tournaments draw some of the best programs in California, so earning those rankings is no small achievement.
One of their biggest accomplishments so far came at the Glendora Throwdown, where the Wolverines took first place overall. That win gave the team a huge confidence boost, especially heading into the tougher mid-season competitions. Some wrestlers even earned individual medals, adding more excitement to the day and showing how well-rounded the team is.
A huge part of their success comes from the leadership of their team captains: Chanel Corredor (12), Erika Montes (12), Kainani Libunao (12), Valeria Alonso (12) and Eliana Trevino (12). This group has helped bring the team together, support younger wrestlers and keep the energy high during both practices and competitions.
The captains also help run warmups, organize team bonding activities and make sure everyone stays focused during long tournament days. Their leadership has created a really supportive atmosphere that has helped the whole team grow.
Corredor shared how much this season means to her, saying, “I’m very proud of the girls this season and how much they’re progressing.”
She added that seeing everyone improve week after week has been one of the most rewarding parts of the year. Corredor says watching the team develop into a top-ranked squad is especially meaningful for her.
Montes also talked about what being a captain feels like to her.
“I’m honored to be a captain because I feel like I’m a role model for the younger girls,” she said. “I just want to help them become the best wrestlers they can be.”
Her motivation helps keep everyone locked in, even during tough practices.
The Wolverines are coached by Head Coach Rich Trevino and Assistant Coaches Mark Pascua and Allura Wyatt, who have all played a big role in helping the team prepare, stay focused and continue improving throughout the season. Their experience has helped the girls navigate challenging tournaments and learn from every match.
One of the biggest highlights this year was their senior night match against rival Dana Hills. With a loud home crowd cheering them on, the varsity girls dominated the dual and won 76-6, making the night even more special for the seniors.
With everything they’ve accomplished so far, the Aliso Niguel girls wrestling team is shaping up to have one of their strongest seasons yet. The girls are hungry for more wins, and with the momentum they’ve built, they’re looking forward to making an impact in the postseason.
