As more and more Aliso Niguel High School students search for job opportunities and chances to earn money, they may not recognize an essential step in the process, which is obtaining a work permit. A work permit is a legal document in the state of California that requires anybody under the age of 18 to hold a job.
Faith Couch (10) says that work permits are “important for keeping us safe and up to date with our jobs and schoolwork.”
There are 4 major steps in acquiring a work permit. The first step is to find an application. The application form for a work permit can be found on the Aliso Niguel High School website, the front office or the guidance office. Work permits are free and easily accessible for students at any time.
Students need to fill out their personal information in the top portion of the form, and this is the second essential step in obtaining a work permit. This information includes students’ first and last names, address, grade, phone number, date of birth and a signature. This information ensures the students’ safety by clarifying their ability to work and confirms that their job is safe and beneficial to them as a high school student.
The student’s employer is to fill out the middle portion of the form. This information includes the business or agency name, the supervisor’s name, phone number and expected maximum and minimum work hours. This information is essential for contact between the student, the school and the employer. It ensures that the student is working in a safe environment that will not affect their education and time in school.
A parent or guardian’s first and last name, signature and date are required when filling out a work permit. This information is another important way of making sure that the student is safe in their work environment and that their parents approve of the job.
Once students have completed filling out their work permit application, they will bring the completed form to the front of the guidance office, where it will be approved and brought back to you. This is the third step in getting a student work permit.
The fourth and final major step in obtaining a work permit is bringing the completed form back to the student’s employer. This step is important in finalizing the information so the student is ready to start their job!
For a work permit to be issued during the school year, the GPA requirement is at least a 2.0. During the summertime, though, the GPA requirement is not enforced. It is important for students to work hard and keep their grades up, in order to have certain opportunities, such as having a job.
Students in the state of California between the ages of 12 and 17 are legally required to get a work permit before starting a job. This is to ensure that they are protected in their place of work and comply with the laws of education in California.
Though these rules are strictly enforced, there are a few exceptions. Work permits are not required for self employment and odd jobs in private homes, such as babysitting.
Work permits can be taken away by the school’s administrator at any time. It can also be cancelled at a parent’s request if they have a valid reason for cancellation. Valid reasons include job scheduling conflicting with school attendance or the job leading to students failing a class.
A work permit “expires,” or becomes invalid, whenever a minor leaves or quits a job. The form must be filled out and submitted for each job. It is important to remember to resubmit these forms to stay up to date.
Starting a job is more than just the money – it is about the real world experience and the connections you make with others. The process of obtaining a work permit is simple, and it opens the door to many new opportunities. If you are ready to start a job, grab a work permit, fill it out and start a new adventure in the working world!
