Before most students arrive on campus and long after the last bell rings, one person remains hard at work ensuring our school stays clean, safe and welcoming. While students and teachers play visible roles in daily school life, our very own school janitors’ quiet dedication often goes unnoticed, Yet without their steady presence, our school would not run as smoothly as it does.
Mr. Martin, one of our many school janitors, has worked at Aliso Niguel High School for nearly 18 years. Every day, he begins his shift before school starts.
Mr. Martin said, “Checking in with the school district to see if any major things needed to be taken care of in order to keep campus clean.”
For many janitors, their job is more than just sweeping floors or emptying trash cans- it’s about creating a positive environment for students and staff. During school events, they help set up and stay late to make sure all the classrooms and bathrooms are safe and clean. Students also notice the impact janitors make.
Aubrey Fletcher (12) says, “ I appreciate what they do and they do the work that no one else wants to clean, devoting their time to clean up our own messes.”
Whether it’s cleaning up after lunch, fixing a broken water fountain or staying late after a football game to tidy the bleachers, janitors consistently go above and beyond their job descriptions.
Beyond their physical work, janitors often contribute to the emotional atmosphere of the school. Many are known for their friendly greetings, encouraging words and willingness to lend a hand. They devote their time and energy to their work and it is highly appreciated by all Staff and students.
Mr. Martin mentioned that “The district offered good benefits with a good pending plan.”
Their work is for the benefit of our safety and their own. Janitors are not only maintaining cleanliness but also ensuring that the entire school environment supports health and learning. Many custodial staff members work long hours handling tasks that require skill, responsibility and care.
Another challenge janitors face is their demanding schedule. Most custodians work full-time, with early morning or late evening shifts that extend beyond regular school hours. They often stay late after dances, games and community events to make sure everything is spotless for the next day. Sometimes taking away their personal family time, including dropping off and picking up their children or even making it home on time for dinner. Balancing work responsibilities with family life can be difficult, yet their dedication never seems to waver.
Janitors remind us that true dedication doesn’t always come with recognition or applause. They show that pride, discipline and kindness can turn an ordinary job into an extraordinary act of service. The cleanliness and comfort we enjoy each day are the result of their unseen commitment. The next time we walk into a freshly cleaned hallway or spotless classroom, we should pause and remember the people who made it possible. It’s the quiet commitment to doing one’s best, day after day, that keeps our schools shining, literally.
