Aliso Niguel’s annual Homecoming dance was held last Saturday, Oct. 19, and brought forth many different opinions on the dance’s overall success. Ranging from excitement about the dance to small critiques on the overall experience.
The dance this year was themed “Musikfest” which was supposed to appeal to a festival and Coachella event. The dance was held outdoors on the school’s blacktop near the tennis courts and the aquatic center. The area was adorned with a wide variety of spotlights, dynamic laser lights creating an inviting environment.
There were a variety of attractions including fun rides, a DJ and open mic karaoke. Along with the snack table, consisting of a wide variety of snacks from chips to cookies, there was a coffee bar offering warm drinks and an ice cream truck for those wanting something a bit sweet.
The dance was complete with a wide variety of games to provide more entertainment including air hockey, ping pong along with other games.
Despite these aspects of the event, some students felt that the price was too high for the cost of attending the dance. Tickets are priced at $50 when students have an ASB card, a pack bought at the beginning of the year.
Many students have complained that the tickets are too expensive for a school event and that it is just not worth it.
Student Luna Kitsu (11) commented on the issue and shared, “For what we got it was a good experience overall, but I feel that it wasn’t worth the price. I think that students should experience it at least once but I don’t feel that they need to spend so much money on a ticket every year.”
In terms of the theme, some students said that theme seemed very similar to last year’s theme which was “Mixtape”. In which the grades were given different music genres such as country, rock, disco and pop. This year’s theme “Musikfest” remained consistent with the music-themed dance like last year, the only difference seemed to be narrowing down to artists instead of genres. This year the artists given to each grade were Bruno Mars, Pitbull, Taylor Swift and Drake.
When asked about the theme, Sarah O’Brien (11) said, “I liked the theme but I think that it seemed too similar to last year’s theme. I’ve seen other schools doing really creative themes like Mario, Moana, Superheroes and other themes. I hope that next year the theme isn’t music related and it will be something new.”
Many students enjoyed the rides at the dance as they offered students a fun fair-like experience.
Devin Williams (9) said, “I really enjoyed the rides, especially the spinning wheel ride. It was the one where you stand against the wall of the ride and it spins you at a 45-degree angle in the air. I think I went on it about three times because of how fun it was.”
A few students have said that they thought the DJ did a great job choosing songs that were able to get everyone excited and hyped up. The students did not wait long to get a mosh pit going to bring the energy to the dance floor.
With the 2024 Aliso homecoming dance over, students hope that Aliso Niguel’s ASB will take student feedback into consideration when planning the next homecoming dance.
