In late January and early February, California has been experiencing a polar vortex. One community especially affected by this is Aliso Viejo.
The cool air, which is typically confined to the Arctic region, has ventured southward and has made its way to Aliso Viejo. The rare polar vortex brings cooler temperatures and icy conditions to Aliso causing problems for the residents are used to more warmer climates. The community, however, has been trying to maintain daily life despite the unusual circumstances and change in climate.
Talan Doherty (11) speaks about the polar vortex saying, “Yeah it’s kinda annoying. It affects the way people drive and causes more crashes.”
With the changes to the conditions around, the probability of accidents happening is higher. Drivers should be more cautious of driving around this time.
Students and teachers at Aliso have also been experiencing heavy rain alongside the polar vortex, which causes them to wear more layers of heavy clothing. Some students, on the other hand, are not affected as much by the winter vortex due to being inclined to living in colder conditions.
Nahla Lemtouni (10) states, “I have noticed that California temperatures have become colder and it hasn’t really affected my life because I lived in the North for 13 years, so I’m not deeply affected by this temperature drop.”
The heavy winds also have made life a bit more difficult as the umbrellas near the science building have fallen due to the heavy winds. The rain alongside the polar vortex has made the possibility of arriving at school on time more difficult, since drivers are cautioned to drive carefully.
The cool air is also a nuisance for classes that do not have a working heater in their classroom and have to deal with the cool air. Many students and teachers at Aliso have been complaining about the cold weather.
The Aliso Viejo community, overall, has had many complaints about this polar vortex. It seems that Aliso cannot wait for the polar vortex to pass and be able to go back to normal with the warmer climates and summer nearing. Even if some people from Aliso enjoy the colder weather, many can agree that keeping warm is essential to staying safe and performing well.
The Aliso community has so far been doing its best during these times and changes as the community adapts. With the concerns of its people, we hope that the polar vortex will soon come to an end to have a day of sunshine and warmth once more.
