The greatly anticipated winter break has now come and gone, but most students seem unsatisfied with school starting back up.
Capistrano Unified School District’s winter break started on Thursday, Dec. 21 on the last day of school finals, lifting a heavy weight off all students.
The break passed through Christmas and New Year’s and concluded on Jan. 7. This means students had a total of 18 days off of school.
But are students content with the number of days they received?
Winter break is crucial to reset our minds for the next semester ahead of us, marking another year. The second semester provides another year for students to demonstrate their excellence.
Although the 18 days were meant to be a break from school and rest, many students find that they are even more tired after the break than they are during school.
Late nights with friends and partying caused most students’ sleep schedules to fall to pieces. Most students add that they were more likely to stay up late during the break than during school.
This leaves the question: was the break an opportunity for students to have the fun they weren’t able to have during school?
“I usually have a set schedule for when I sleep, but over break I let loose a little and had a couple nights where I stayed up. Most nights I hung out with friends or played video games,” comments Shant Aslanian (12).
The average high school student’s bedtime is around 11, but some students stay awake way past that time. This is often due to social media or playing video games, both of which can cause hours to pass in the blink of an eye.
Although winter break gave us 18 days to rest, most students felt that there weren’t enough days. Students prefer to have longer breaks so they can have sufficient time to do everything they want.
“I feel that the break was kind of short. It went by in the blink of an eye and I can’t believe we’re already back in school. I wish I had some more time to sleep in and hang out with my friends,” comments Christian Klenske (11).
Although most students wish for more break days, it is not the same for every student at Aliso Niguel. One student in particular, William Donnel-Crume (12) wishes for fewer days.
William states, “I wish there were fewer days in the break so that I could get right back to school. This would mean that I would graduate even a couple days earlier than expected, meaning I would be out of here.”
Another senior comments about his time during winter break.
Troy Lightbody (12) says, “Yeah the break was so nice. I mostly just hung out with friends and slept in. It was kind of cold during the break so the warmth of my bed was the best feeling.”
Most students share that they feel like they deserve more than an 18 day break for all their hard work during the first semester. But it seems just enough for students to have a fresh reset and start their second semester off on the right foot.
