All around the United States, freezing temperatures and harsh weather conditions have been rising, experts calling it an Arctic Blast.
Scientists have recorded record-breaking temperatures during the summer of 2023 and frigid temperatures coming into 2024. In the summer, Death Valley hit an astonishing 129 degrees fahrenheit, which also came with extreme wildfires and storms.
Around 80 percent of the U.S. has been experiencing harsh winter conditions since the beginning of December. Winter Storms across the Midwest, East Coast, and Northern regions of America have been shutting down schools and businesses.
Schools in Texas have been closed for a couple of days due to the difficulties with the weather.
With most of the Country struggling to survive, temperatures continue to plummet. Most states are witnessing temperatures in the low negatives, causing many to miss work and other activities.
Around Aliso Niguel, temperatures can start around high 40s. Students are complaining about the freezing temperatures and most wear multiple layers to keep warm.
“This winter is too cold. I haven’t been this cold in a long time. I don’t know what’s going on for it to be this cold,” comments Bora Vanli (12).
Vanli is currently a senior at Aliso Niguel meaning he has endured three winters at the school so far. This winter is his fourth and he claims it is the coldest yet.
During October, Aliso witnessed temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s, sometimes going all the way up to the 80s. Temperatures have now dropped 20-30 degrees in less than three months.
Many wear jackets and coats to keep warm.
Sam Sicat (11) comments, “I wear a shirt, a long sleeve, and a jacket to keep warm. Sometimes my hands are so cold it’s hard to write.”
Though there are cold temperatures outside, the hallways and classrooms are always heated to keep students warm.
The weather is forecasted to rise to around the 60s and 70s for the next couple of months. Temperatures will slowly warm up while the spring season approaches.
“I can’t wait for spring, it is my favorite season. I can’t bear this winter season. My hands are always cold coming out of my car,” states Deven Tata (12).
Unfortunately, the Arctic Blast has resulted in 12 deaths across the U.S., mostly from hypothermia.
It is advised that most should stay inside and avoid going outside unless it is necessary. It is recommended to wear multiple warm layers and to drink warm beverages.
Enduring the harsh winter temperatures, some students are seen wearing shorts, skirts, and just a t-shirt. Some state that the weather is not too cold and it is bearable.
Wearing just shorts and a thin T-shirt, Jacob Phillips (11) says, “This weather isn’t that cold. It isn’t comparable to the temperatures up in the mountains while I snowboard. That weather is crazy, my fingers feel like they are going to fall off.”
With these ice-cold temperatures, it is a good idea to keep warm at all times, staying indoors with the heat blasting and a cup of hot chocolate.
