If you’ve ever stepped into the library at Aliso Niguel High School, you’ve seen students studying quietly, being productive and getting work done, working on group projects and getting the academic support that they need. It is more than just a place with books to read; it is a space for collaboration and productivity.
One day, it’s a quiet place to study. Next, it’s closed for an event or a meeting. For many students at ANHS, this is an inconvenience and takes away valuable study time.
What happens to students when the place they go to study and learn is closed for an entire day? Where are there other available places around campus to get work done?
“Other than the school library, there aren’t any good places to study,” said sophomore Faith Couch.
The ANHS library’s daily hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Thursdays, NHS tutoring takes place in the library from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. There are many students who take advantage of this tutoring opportunity. When the library is closed, what happens to the students who are trying to study? What if these students don’t have another quiet place to get work done?
Challenge Accepted, an event for seniors, will take place Oct. 7–8 in the library, taking up both days. This is going to impact seniors, but it will affect freshman, sophomores, and juniors with major tests and projects coming up.
Just a few days later, a chromebook refresh will be going on in the library on Oct. 13.
On Nov. 20, an event will take place regarding the seal of biliteracy. This is another event that will be taking up the entire day in the library. For some, this will be beneficial to them, but for many other students it will be just another study day affected by the library’s closing.
More often than not, there are many students that need a nice place to study, and with the library being closed so often, it is difficult for them to find one. How can students succeed when a valuable academic space is unavailable?
