Every Friday from 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Sea View Community Center, there is a volunteer opportunity called Tech Tutoring. Here, students assist senior citizens with solving technology problems.
They answer questions that the elderly have regarding their technology, as well as just being someone to talk to for them. Tech Tutoring has gained more popularity recently because many people enjoy being involved and getting volunteer hours for CSF or NHS.
Volunteers often help with setting up email accounts, using social media, organizing photos or learning how to video call family members. Some sessions even include showing seniors how to use newer apps like Uber or Venmo, making their daily lives a little easier.
Volunteers assist with online forms, help seniors set up devices like tablets or smart speakers, or guide them through video tutorials. This variety keeps the sessions interesting and gives students hands-on problem-solving experience.
Ridima Kazi (11) says, “I like to go because I get to bond with senior citizens and help them solve their technology problems.” Many students like Kazi enjoy participating in this on their Friday afternoons.
Kazi also believes that “it goes further than just helping them with their technology problems, I actually feel like listening to their stories means a lot to them too.”
The Vice President, Shiley Moeinzadeh, says that her favorite part about organizing the volunteering is seeing the immense amount of participation. She says she is blessed to have so many people willing to volunteer and support the cause.
The President of Tech Tutoring, Ansh Sharma (12), has been going since his freshman year. He developed a passion to help his community, and taking on the role of president has helped him feel like he is making an impact.
All of the seniors are grateful that there are so many students willing to help them with their technology problems. Some seniors even go as far as bringing gifts like chocolates for the volunteers to express their gratitude.
Tech Tutoring hopes to expand to other community centers in the coming years. The club leaders also plan to host a “Digital Safety Day” to teach seniors how to avoid online scams. With its success, the program continues to demonstrate that small acts of service can have a significant impact.
Throughout the entire school year, this volunteering opportunity is offered except on holidays or rare exceptions such as right before finals week.
Tech Tutoring has become so popular because it’s a bridge between generations. Seniors feel supported, and students gain empathy and leadership skills, making the program a lasting tradition at the Sea View Community Center.
