With fall in full swing at Aliso Niguel, students are trading swimsuits for sweaters and movie nights are becoming a regular weekend thing. But not just any movie fits this time of year. Whether you’re staying in during a cold night or just chasing that cozy, eerie vibe, certain films seem made for October.
These are the 10 best fall movies to watch this season, not just because they mention Halloween or spooky stuff, but because they carry the mood of fall in their colors, pacing and atmosphere. They’re the kind of movies that feel like warm drinks, gray skies and a little bit of magic.
Take “Coraline,” for example. It’s not just creepy — it’s quiet and strange in a way that lingers. The colors are muted, the world feels damp and foggy and it’s the kind of story that makes you want to curl up under a blanket.
The same goes for “Twilight.” People might joke about it, but the gray skies, pine trees and slow pace make it feel like a rainy fall day in movie form.
The first “Harry Potter” movie is another one that just feels like autumn. Hogwarts, with its floating candles, long tables of food and students in sweaters walking through stone hallways, completely captures the season. There’s even a full-on Halloween feast. It’s not a Halloween movie, but it’s definitely a fall one.
“Jennifer’s Body,” on the other hand, is messier but in the best way. The high school setting, nighttime scenes and small-town weirdness all give off the kind of chaotic energy that matches October. It’s funny, unsettling and full of that “something feels off” tone that fits fall so well.
“A good fall movie makes you feel like it’s already Halloween, even if it’s not,” says Sofia Cortes (10). “It’s more about the mood than the plot.”
“Corpse Bride” and “Hocus Pocus” both bring that Halloween feeling but in totally different ways. One is calm and dreamlike, the other wild and funny. “Fantastic Mr. Fox” isn’t spooky at all, but with its warm-toned scenes, crunchy leaves and woodland animals in sweaters, it’s basically fall as a movie.
“Fall movies don’t have to be scary,” says Khloe Iskandar (10). “They just have to feel kind of quiet, weird, and eerie in a cool way.”
That vibe shows up in different ways in “Ghostbusters,” “Scream,” and “Beetlejuice.” All three mix comedy and weirdness with a little bit of fear — but not the kind that keeps you up at night. They’re fun, full of personality, and just off enough to feel like they belong in October.
If you’re ready to dive into that fall feeling, this list has you covered. Whether you want something cozy, creepy, or a little bit in between, these 10 movies are perfect for the season.
