Aliso Niguel High School students in the 2025-26 school year are in tune about their fashion opinions for the changing season. Trends come in and out of style every year, but some come back every year in new ways.
Josephine Rettich (12) is passionate about fashion, with an emphasis on unique personal style. Personal style is important to have, especially in high school. Self expression through style connects students and helps to form deeper connections with classmates.
Rettich said, “A lot of people meet each other through their style, I know I have. On the other hand though, I think a lot of people feel obligated to follow trends and that can have more of a negative effect than a positive one, because people don’t form their own style just follow what’s popular for the time.”
Students are excited about what they want to see this autumn for fashion. Some trends come back every year, while others are short lived.
“Last year beige and white puffers were pretty popular and I hope something better comes along this year. I like the idea of changing the color palette you wear when the season changes, like in the fall wearing dark green, pink, and brown.” Rettich added.
In past years, warm neutrals are popular colors for the fall, drawing back to the oranges and browns of the falling leaves. Shelby Colwell (11) makes cost efficiency and sustainability efforts in her fashion choices.
“I thrift a majority of my clothes, like all my jeans and sweaters.” Colwell said.
UGGS and slippers have made a comeback, emphasizing comfortability walking around school. UGGS are often paired with foldover flared leggings and an oversized hoodie.
Trend cycles happen every year, indicating the last impact fashion trends have on students.
“I’ve been noticing those spiky headbands from the 90’s getting popular again, and I have to say I don’t really like them. Some girls wear it like a headband instead of pushing it along their scalp and it’s just not it.” Rettich states.
As the weather gets colder, transitioning from summer to autumn outfits can be overwhelming. The day typically starts out cold and warms up by the afternoon. With the uncertainty about the weather, planning outfits ahead of time is key.
Rettich said, “For guys I think that cool overcoats and layering is gonna be popular as it gets cold out.”
Experimenting with style at school can be scary. Fashion is a great way to make new friends and figure out what colors and silhouettes suit an individual. While fashion means something different for everyone on campus, the general theme for fall is coziness and practicality.
