Wolverine+ is a 40 minute tutorial period in the middle of the school day, in which students can use to make up tests, complete unfinished assignments, do homework and just hang out with friends. Many teachers make Wolverine+ classes dedicated to helping students with a particular assignment or lesson.
Teachers put good effort in deciding the tutorials for their students but the question still remains, what are students truly using their Wolverine+ time for?
Mrs. Anderson says, “For students that are signing up for extra help sessions are definitely focused on doing better.”
However, the main concern for teachers is the lack of students working on assignments in study hall sessions.
Mrs. Anderson said, “I do see that in study hall sessions, there are students that would rather play games than to finish work.”
When asked if it is realistic for students to be working the whole Wolverine Plus time, Josephine Rettich (12) says, “No, it’s really unrealistic for me, especially because I have wrestling from 4:30 to 6 p.m. everyday and I live 25 minutes away from the school.”
For many students, especially student athletes they use Wolverine+ as a period in between classes to relax, take a break from work or take a nap. Some teachers are against this use of Wolverine+.
Mr. Burns says, “That’s not what it’s meant for. Because if we did that, then we could take those 40 minutes and spread them out between the other three periods, and we could have 2 hour classes instead.”
Opposing Mr. Burns, Mr. Lhime believes that, “Like all of us, we need breaks, while the adults have breaks. Students need breaks too.”
Many students when asked what they typically do in Wolverine+ go completely against Mr. Burns’s view.
Rachel James (10) said, “I eat and I goof off with my friends.”
Most students describe their tutorial time as being split between both work and relaxing, depending on their work load at the moment.
Jayden Jahanzeb (11) says, “I just relax two thirds of the time, but one third of the time I’m actually studying for tests.”
In order to keep students engaged Ms. Terhardt explains that she makes targeted support days which she notices students are very appreciative of and stay on task during.
There is a clear split of students who are fully productive throughout Wolverine+ and students who take the time to relax.
