During the Sept. 17 Capistrano Unified School District Board Meeting, members discussed several updates affecting students, families and classrooms across the district for this school year.
The CUSD Board continues to support many families through events like the Back-to-School Bash, creating opportunities for students to receive essential school supplies and learn about scholarship programs. Students are able to go through pathways through CCA to build their future plans.
In addition, students are finding new ways to plan their futures through CCA, the district’s Career Technical Education program. CCA offers hands-on experience in various career pathways and continues to grow as a vital resource for high school students.
Student Board Member Addison Hansen praised the program, highlighting its impact on student growth and its role in giving back to the community.
Board Vice President Lisa Davis addresses the importance of student voice and free expression. She referenced political commentator Charlie Kirk while encouraging students to speak up and stand firm in their beliefs, even when facing disagreement. “It takes courage,” she noted, “to respectfully express your opinions and stand up for yourself.”
Another key topic was elementary class sizes, remaining a growing concern as classrooms reach maximum capacity. The Board is actively reviewing whether current class size policies may be affecting student learning outcomes.
The meeting also spotlighted new and expanding career pathway programs, including Patient Care, Fashion Design and Transitional Kindergarten support. Presentations from pathway representatives emphasized these programs shaping student experiences and preparing them for both college and career readiness.
As Capistrano Unified School District continues to expand academic and career opportunities, the Board remains focused on student growth, equity and innovation. With active support from district leaders, staff and community partners, students are gaining the tools they need to thrive in and beyond the classroom.
