As the fall season progresses, our girls have been competing well with them placing high on the leaderboard in a majority of their meets including winning in Woodbridge. Other matches included the Laguna Hills invitational and Dana Hills invitational.
Woodbridge, took place on Sep 19 to Sep 20 at The Great Park, Irvine, was known as one of the toughest races with teams from around the state competing in this event including teams from both central and southern California like Menlo-Atherton High School or Rancho Bernardo High School.
The racers for the 3 mile event were Camila Abraca (12) who ran a 17:55.7, Aubrey Jones (12) who ran a 18:12.6, Nadia Botsfani (10) who ran a 18:30.8, Aubrey Fletcher (12) who ran a 18:44.6, Brynlee Hawkins (11) who ran a 18:52.5 and Sabrina Corral-Rzpeka (11) who ran a 20:55.1.
The team placed well with them scoring 112 points in total allowing them to be just five points ahead of the second place team. The course record is only 15:20.3, an incredible time for three miles taken by a girl from Santiago High School but the Aliso Girls still pulled through in the end taking first place.
The team is continuing to push towards games in the California Interscholastic Federation contending with teams like Trabuco, San Juan Hills, and other teams in the South Coast League and are considered D1 for CIF.
As Nadia Bofanti (10), a runner for the varsity girls cross country team, said about the team based on improvements, “I think we need to improve on racing and passing people rather than running just for time.”
The girls are not the only ones recognizing their talent and skill. Coach Colwell, one of the coaches for girl’s cross, said “The ladies are very dedicated and have put a lot of time in so that they can improve. It is a challenging but rewarding experience in which the girls bond through shared training and competition. It is a very tight knit group who welcome new runners and enjoy being together.”
The girls seem optimistic about their season especially with new additions like Aubrey Jones (12) from Virginia and other runners who are switching between JV and Varsity.
The team still has many challenges as we progress through the season with matches at the Central Park Invitational, Clovis Invitational, and the Mt. Sac Invitational throughout the month of October.
As we continue to round out the season, the girls have not only been focusing on school but athletics as well and a lot of people can not wait to see how this team will turn out.
