As we continue through the fall season, the girls’ golf team has been progressing very well and has had many improvements, and is starting to push towards the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) league in the near future.
The team currently holds an impressive overall record of 4-2, with still many matches left to compete in. Within the League, they hold a record of 2-0 with nice wins against Mission Viejo High School. We are still waiting for the upcoming two league matches against El Toro High School, which still plays a crucial role in their league placement and playoff spot.
With a few matches under their belt, the current ranking of the girls’ team is 23rd in the South Coast League in CIF. They have been consistently going up against tough teams like Beckman High School, Mission Viejo High School, and other tough opponents in their bracket. Despite all of these tough challenges, they remain resilient and have been improving week by week.
As the girls’ head coach, Mr. Turney, has said, “Right now for everybody to shave a couple more strokes off their score,” adding, “If we could get more consistent scores, get rid of simple errors like 3 putts or penalty strokes that all add up.” Coach Turney clearly has consistent goals in mind for his team as they progress through the league.
Coach Turney also noted how Beckman High School has historically been a recurring problem for the team, normally having close scoring with them over the past few seasons; however, the girls are known to be hardworking and resilient in their endeavors, with many great chances to win, and this has become a defining trait of this team.
Currently, the team, instead of being purely dominated by mostly upperclassmen, has had a mix of sophomores and freshmen stepping up and making an impact while being a part of the varsity group. With many of the past seniors graduating, we have seen many of our players getting a better focus and beginning to shine.
The coaching staff is also a key part of the team’s success. With Coach Turney is Coach Wayne Westling, a returning golf coach who was a retired teacher, who is currently helping the team. His support and many years of experience are essential to the success of the girls’ golf team and bring mentorship and valuable insight.
As our season edges closer towards its conclusion, we wish the Girls’ Golf team continued success on the course, as well as in the classroom. Best of luck to them as they chase their goal of making it to the California Interscholastic Federation and perhaps achieving even more beyond that.
