The 5 Star app was added this year to be a replacement for physical IDs. It includes several different features that many students and staff find helpful.
The “My ID” tab shows a picture of the student, their name, grade, QR code and barcode. The barcode can be scanned to enter the library, acting as a replacement for the physical ID. In the activities section below the student’s name, it shows if the student has a free period or not, and any sports or activities they’re involved in.
Taleiya Gordon (11) says, “It’s cool and accessible because I never bring my ID with me to school.”
Jayden Jahanzeb (11) says, “I think the 5 Star is a good app because I can use my ID whenever.”
Sabrina Corral-Rzepka (11) says, “It’s pretty convenient, you don’t need to worry about losing your ID as often or worry about forgetting it at school events.”
Joel Shin (11) says, “It’s good because you don’t need to carry an ID card all the time.”
Shiley Moeinzadeh (11) says, “I think the new system is very convenient because in my freshman year, I had a friend who forgot his ID at home while we were driving to Homecoming, and we had to drive back home and grab it, which made us kind of late.”
Students’ tickets to most school events are connected to their student IDs, meaning that if they don’t have their ID with them, they can’t enter. Most, if not all, students carry their phones with them at all times, so having their ticket attached to their phone now in the 5 Star app makes it way more convenient for the students.
Before the school started using digital IDs, students who had a free period would have to turn in their ID to the attendance window every semester to get a sticker. The color and location of the sticker would change each semester and served as proof of their free period. After turning the ID in, students would have to wait several days to get the ID back.
Another key feature of the 5 Star App is that school administrators can see what students are participating in.
Mrs. Hosseini says, “It’s an important data point for us because when kids are connected and participating at school, they tend to do better at school.”
Furthermore, the app is helpful for administrators in student services because it gives them the ability to notify students directly. On the app, students and staff will be aware of any unserved discipline hours and whether they are on the behavior contract or not.
Students find the addition of the 5 Star App as a more convenient and effective way to attend school events and prove they have a free period.
