Aliso Niguel High School has acquired some new fashion trends that can be seen all over campus. Students have recently been seen wearing things such as tote bags, flip flops, and purses, but not everything is seen in a positive light.
Both students and teachers have been seen voicing their opinions about some uncomfortable trends that have been seen around school.
“I personally like the rise in flip flop wearers, because they are comfy and when you have your sport it makes it easy to change your shoes,” shares Elle Aguilar (10). “I am on the water polo team and it makes it so convenient when I have to change for practice. However, people over-sagging their pants makes me uncomfortable because I personally do not want to see everything they are showing.”
Wearing flip flops to school is a very large trend being worn by both guys and girls to schools in California. Although there are many students that agree with Aguilar, there are people who find it uncomfortable to see the feet of students at school.
Many male students at Aliso Niguel have been wearing their pants very low, past their waist lines. This trend is known as “sagging” and while it may be comfortable and fashionable to some, it has deeply disturbed many other students.
A replacement of traditional backpacks with tote bags has become very popular among high school students. Tote bags can allow students to express themselves through design and style. Tote bags are easier to carry than a backpack and more convenient to carry school supplies.
“Tote bags are cute and easy to carry; they are also easy to store because they aren’t as big as a backpack,” stated Samuel Zanatta (10).
Students do not need to carry all of their school supplies every day due to the block schedule at Aliso Niguel, so tote bags are a convenient alternative which allows students to carry only what they need for each day.
Senior Backpacks have recently made a comeback in high schools with many seniors wearing fun, kid designed backpacks for their last year of high school. Senior backpacks allow seniors to have something fun and childish before they enter adulthood.
“I think it’s really cute because it’s like an homage to like the bookends, like, ‘Oh I started out school in kindergarten with a Spider-Man backpack and now I’m ending my senior year with a Spider-Man backpack,’” says Señora Sepe, a Spanish teacher at Aliso Niguel.
Also, with many school resources being transferred online, seniors can carry those small childish backpacks without worrying about not being able to fit their school items.
Clothing with profanity, drugs, guns, and alcohol has been spotted around school and it has been disturbing to some people. Teachers have noticed it and do not like this supposed “trend.”
Señora Sepe has stated that she believes these clothes are inappropriate and questionable to be wearing at school. As an alternative to clothing like this, students should be wearing more school appropriate clothing that they can wear without the fear of getting “caught.”
