The Aliso Niguel Surf team rides their wave into the new school year.
The Co-ed sport is led by Coach Warner and has officially locked in their surfers for the year.
Their tryouts started on August 20 with a mandatory meeting at the school’s pool. The next two days followed with the Girls and Boys swim test which consisted of a 100 yard swim in under 2:30 minutes and a five minute tread.
The second round of tryouts was at Salt Creek on the 27, where the surfers had to showcase their skills on bodyboards, longboards and shortboards.
Two days later was their third and last tryout at Doheny State Beach with long boards only.
After all three tryouts you found out if you made the team.
The team’s surf schedule this year is Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 am to 9 am. They can be seen at Salt Creek and Strands alongside Capo Valley High School.
Aliso has seven matches in Oct. with their first being against San Juan Hills on the first day of the month. Their next two matches are against Laguna Beach and Tesoro on Oct 3 and 8 respectively.
Next is two back to back matches against Capo Valley on Oct. 10 and 15. On Oct. 17 they matched up against Tesoro once again.
Their next matches are on the 24th and 29th against San Clemente, the first being away and the second at home.
To finish off the Oct. matches on the 30 is against Dana Hills on our home court. Their last game is on Nov. 5 against Laguna Beach to finish off the season.
Maverick Turner (12) says, “Surfing good, no surfing bad”.
With just 10 matchups in their season Aliso hopes to compete well and move onto the finals.
