Throughout the course of one’s senior year, seniors partake in different traditions. The most notable being senior backpacks.
Senior backpacks are children’s backpacks that resemble a sense of youth that seniors once relate to. These backpacks have cartoon characters or other symbols of youth.
This trend enables students to bring out their inner child when they are about to enter the world.
Mariah Lewis (12) shares, “I participated in the senior backpack because I thought it was very nostalgic and cute. It’s just a fun way to feel like a kid again knowing that we’re about to be adults and go into the real world.”
Expressing one’s inner child helps ease the stresses seniors feel about growing up.
These backpacks show off a sense of individualism within the seniors and create a capsule of memories.
While some students argue that these backpacks are inefficient to senior schedules and workload, these backpacks are still seen schoolwide with the seniors who seem to be loving their childlike bags.
Angela Dizon (12) shares, “I participated in senior backpack because ,of course, my friends were doing it and it looked so fun to be a part of. I’ve always seen it since freshman year and told myself I have to be a part of that and be cool. What it means to me is showing what my interests were in childhood and what I grew up with, especially pokemon which I found is a big part of my childhood and interests of today.”
The representation of childhood nostalgia through a simple bag provides an excellent source of school spirit.
While some seniors prefer a normal day backpack, students with the senior backpacks have no stress wearing these bags for their last years.
These backpacks show examples of childhood idols that built them to who they are today.
Gia D’Amelio (12) adds, I participated in having a senior backpack because I wanted to incorporate something into my senior year that kindergarten me would enjoy. This trend is reminiscent of my childhood obsession with Disney Princesses, and it makes me happy to wear a backpack with characters I used to idolize.”
The joy and nostalgia these backpacks bring is never ending. By providing a new pop of spirit for their last year of school, seniors add a fun sense of creativity around campus.
As their final year begins, seniors are grasping onto the every first “last” that they can have.
