The Aliso Niguel girls lacrosse team is dominating the field as they are currently competing in CIF playoffs after placing second in the Sea View League with an overall record of seven wins and one loss.
On April 18, the team played their final league game against Dana Hills High School. Aliso Niguel defeated them with a final score of 20 to 10. This game was an amazing victory for girls as the Dana Hills Dolphins are notoriously known as Aliso Niguel’s school rival. This win also helped the team secure the spot in CIF and advance on to the playoffs.
Leading the team to victory this season is Head Coach Bob Mezeul and Assistant Coach Richard Welling. In addition to the coaches, Zoey Roth (12) is leading the way as the team captain while also playing the low right attack position on the field.
Roth shared, “I’m really happy and satisfied with my time at Aliso. Being captain this season meant so much to me, as I got to lead and be part of something bigger than myself… It’s really bittersweet to be leaving but I feel like I’ve left my mark and had an amazing time playing and working to get where I am today.”
They started CIF on May 1, and competed against Downey High School. The team won with a final score of 18 to 13 and advanced on to play against University High School.
Kendall Hwang (12), a valuable asset to the team’s defense, stated that, “My favorite part of the season so far was beating University in the quarter finals of playoffs… but overall I’m most proud of our commitment and spirit that our team shows throughout each game.”
Roth commented on that game and also called it her favorite part of the season, saying that, “when we played the CIF quarter finals. The refs called a foul with one second left on the clock and our goalie, Sydney Elovitz (12) had to save a shot from center hash. She saved it and everyone in the stands, in the sidelines, and on the field cheered and screamed because we had just beat Uni 15 to 14.”
It was an incredible day for the Wolverines as this victory secured the girls lacrosse team a spot in the CIF semi finals where they will compete against Trabuco Hills High School on May 9.
Emma Modeer (12), who plays defense alongside Hwang, stated “I’m most proud of the team’s bond, that is what ultimately helps us win and be a strong team.”
Modeer continued to note that she feels “bittersweet as we’re currently in playoffs, but knowing the season is at an end is sad. I’ll miss it so much.”
Similarly, Hwang said, “It’s bittersweet to be in my last season,” when asked about her time playing for Aliso’s girls lacrosse program.
Nonetheless, the team is working hard in preparation for the CIF semifinals, and as they do so, their families, friends and fellow Wolverines are eagerly waiting to cheer on the girls at their next game day against Trabuco Hills.
