Aliso continues to push academic boundaries with its AP Capstone program, a rigorous, research-driven course designed to challenge students beyond traditional AP classes. This two-year program, which consists of AP Seminar and AP Research, is gaining recognition at Aliso for cultivating critical thinking, academic writing and independent research skill, preparing students for college and beyond.
AP Capstone is an advanced diploma program developed by the College Board that allows students to engage in interdisciplinary research, collaboration and real-world problem-solving. The two courses AP Seminar and AP Research require students to develop research questions, analyze information from multiple perspectives and present their findings in both written and oral formats. Those who complete the program and pass four additional AP exams earn the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma.
Aliso introduced AP Capstone to give Wolverines an edge in higher education. This is to offer students an opportunity to develop the skills they will need in college—writing, argumentation and research—before they step onto a university campus.
Mrs. Rose, Aliso’s AP Capstone teacher shares, “What makes AP Capstone unique at Aliso is that it is one of two schools in the entire district that offer it and it’s a great class that expands creativity.”
Unlike traditional AP courses, where students study specific content, AP Capstone allows them to choose their own research topics, making the program highly personalized. Enrollment in AP Capstone at Aliso has been growing, as students and parents recognize its value. The program is seen as a competitive advantage for college applications, with universities acknowledging the AP Capstone Diploma as an indicator of a student’s ability to handle college-level research.
Beyond college readiness, students say the program gives them lifelong skills. It’s not just about writing papers—it’s about learning how to think critically and argue effectively.
Bella Peiffer (10) shares, “My favorite part about AP Seminar is that there is a bunch of free time since there is very little homework given and I encourage students to take it then AP Research after, where they are given the opportunity to co-write research papers with professionals which looks good on any type of application after high school.”
The culmination of AP Capstone is AP Research, where students undertake an independent, year-long research project. They identify a gap in existing research, conduct their own study and present their findings in a formal paper and oral defense.
As Aliso’s AP Capstone Program continues to thrive, it remains a testament to the school’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and student success. Whether students pursue STEM, humanities or social sciences, AP Capstone is giving Wolverines the tools to lead, research and excel in whatever comes next.
Taking AP Capstone comes with a lot of opportunities, challenges and rewards. It pushes students to think independently, analyze complex issues and communicate ideas effectively. This experience isn’t just about earning credits, it’s about gaining the skills that set you apart in college and beyond. You’ll learn how to research topics that matter to you, collaborate with others and present your findings with confidence.
If you are looking for a way to challenge yourself and stand out, this is the perfect opportunity. It prepares you for the expectations of higher education while growing creativity, critical thinking and self-discipline. If you want an experience that will push you beyond memorization and into real-world problem-solving, this is the right choice.
