The Aliso Niguel Mock Trial Club is giving students the opportunity to step into the world of law. Founded by junior Alanni Rogers, the club is helping students learn the fundamentals of legal proceedings in hopes of applying the knowledge in a future mock case.
Mock Trial is an academic club that simulates real courtroom trials as students take on roles such as attorneys and witnesses. Although not competing in regional and state-level competitions, Aliso’s Mock Trial club focuses on learning the basics of law, courtroom procedures and argumentation, helping students reach a high level of understanding of court.
Club president Alanni Rogers has been interested in law and criminal justice for years. “During my eighth-grade year, we had a mock trial team, and I enjoyed my experience there,” she said. This passion led her to start the club at the high school level, allowing students to also share her passion, explore legal careers and build public speaking skills.
Many students who joined the club had similar interests and reasons–eager to learn more about the legal system. “[When I grow up,] I want to be a lawyer, so that’s why I joined,” freshman Bhagyesh Padwal shares.
He also adds that “I’ll be speaking in front of the class, so that’ll help me gain confidence speaking in public.” The club is not only a stepping stone for future lawyers but also a place to develop essential communication skills.
During the meetings, students explore legal terminology, analyze past cases and practice courtroom procedures. Members are also learning how to structure opening and closing statements, cross-examine witnesses and make persuasive arguments–all skill sets required in court.
The Mock Trial Club is also a place to socialize and have fun with like-minded students. Junior club member Kseniia Antipina expresses “The Mock Trial Club is really fun because I am around my friends and it is a fun environment to be in…” The club aims to create a friendly environment where students can ultimately have a fun time.
Meetings are held during lunch on Mondays in Ms. Burch’s room: room 408. For those who are interested in joining, they can text ‘@anhsmock’ to the number 81010. Whether students dream of being a lawyer or just want to learn how to build a strong argument, the Mock Trial Club is the perfect place to start.
