The Persian Club has brought Persian culture to our school, promoting inclusivity and teaching students about the culture. The club was founded in 2022 after the founder, Milad Davaran decided to combine the two existing Persian clubs at Aliso Niguel.
The club is currently run by President Ava Menhaji (11) and Vice President Atrisa Tagizadeh (11), with Secretary and Publicity manager Rose Tabatabai (12) and Treasurer Soushia Moghadam (12).
A main reason for why they started the club was to spread appreciation of the Persian culture, as there is a large population of Persian students at Aliso Niguel. Additionally, the club hopes to help new-comers from Iran, by aiding them in academics as well as their social life.
Menhaji says, “There are many stereotypes that may be associated with Persians that are actually not true, so allowing others to learn about it can make a positive impact to all.”
Through combating stereotypes and informing students about the culture, the club spreads positivity and inclusivity.
The club meets on the second Friday of every month, in Room 310, with Mr. Lihme as their club advisor. At their meetings, they teach various topics regarding Iran. They could teach about a major city or a holiday that is celebrated around the country.
At their last meeting, the club hosted a potluck to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year. They encouraged members to bring food and treats, gathering and spending time together.
Menhaji adds, “It brings a feeling of comfort and belonging to most,” which contributes to the overall purpose of the club.
Last semester, on December 15th, the club held a Shabe Yalda celebration at Mason Park. The celebration included Persian Clubs from other high schools and community colleges. Members brought food and drinks, participated in games like Takhte and played soccer and volleyball.
Additionally, at the end of the year, the club invites the members to a dinner. At the dinner, they celebrate both their participation in the club, their accomplishments and the past school year overall.
The club recently had a cultural haft-seen table set up in the school library, to celebrate the Persian New Year.
