As students prepare for college and their future careers, it is important for them to wisely choose their science courses.
ANHS offers a variety of Advanced Placement sciences across the campus and all students are given the opportunity to pick their desired science classes based on their preference and interests.
Mrs. Buechler, a student’s counselor on campus, spoke on this issue, “It is important that students choose their science classes based on their interests and what they know will be beneficial.”
AP science courses are designed to provide students with college-level understanding and knowledge in different fields like Biology, Chemistry, physics and Environmental Sciences.
By taking these classes, students can improve their skills and knowledge to use them in their future career goals.
Furthermore, achieving a high score on the AP exams can help students with college applications.
With the four available AP courses of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science, it is important to note the purpose and topic of each in order to choose wisely.
AP Biology offers a deep understanding of biological concepts. The purpose of this AP class is to prepare students for college courses by covering topics such as genetics, evolution, ecology and cellular processes.
Students who take AP Biology typically have an interest in science and aim to build a strong foundation in the field in order to study a related major in college and further on.
For students interested in medicine, biology can be an incredible foundation by enhancing their critical thinking and real-world application.
Some benefits of taking AP biology include college credit, a strengthened scientific reasoning and preparing students for later career fields.
Contrastingly, AP Biology can be a challenging class to take mainly due to the difficulty of the course. AP Biology is known to be a challenging course for students and tends to put a lot of pressure on the students who take the class.
Sophomore Ai Kato said, “I am really glad I took Biology freshman year because now I know that I will be very interested in AP Biology and that is why I am deciding to learn more in this class.”
Another AP science option for all students is AP Chemistry, which covers a wide range of topics, including atomic structure, chemical bonding and chemistry based knowledge. The course is designed to prove a deeper understanding of chemistry, specifically preparing students interested in STEM fields.
This AP weighted class makes a great option for students who are also interested in going into the medicine or medical field and are looking for a course that will give them a very deep understanding on the topic.
AP Environmental Science (APES) is a course that focuses on the environment and the complex interactions of humans and the Earth.
This course combines concepts of biology, chemistry, geography and social sciences, offering a variety of different understandings of environmental issues.
This course can be very beneficial to students who are intrested or considering careers in environmental science, policy, conservation or other related topics.
Lastly, AP physics is a challenging course on campus that combines a variety of both conceptual understanding and problem solving skills, often requiring math.
This course can be very beneficial to students who are interested in the engineering or math fields and look forward to pursuing a career related to them later in college.
