As we get closer to the end of the school year, students will plan their academic classes with their counselors for the next year. Every year, all students at Aliso Niguel High School individually meet with their counselors in regards to their academic plan.
Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors are given the opportunity to pick their classes and add them on their Aeries account immediately after the winter break. Following their individual choices of their classes, the students must validate their choices with the help of their counselors.
Emma Cox (10), a student at ANHS, spoke on this topic, “I’m unsure what classes I will be taking next and I’m not sure about the credentials and guidelines that I need to meet for next year.”
The student’s classes must include their necessary credentials required for all students to graduate high school.
According to the Capistrano Unified School District, all students are required to take three years of math, four years of English, three years of science, three years of history and two years of world language. They must also take performing arts and physical activity classes in order to successfully be able to graduate high school.
In order to properly plan the years out, counselors provide help by advising students with their recommendations in regards to their choices. The classes that students take are usually accommodated to the students interests in different career fields.
Students looking forward to going into STEM majors usually plan their schedule with sciences and STEM related classes and extracurricular activities.
Comparatively, students who look forward to going into the English major can be advised by their counselors to take necessary and beneficial courses that will aid them in their goals and college plans.
ANHS offers a variety of classes for all students with various interests and meeting with counselors can ease the challenge of choosing the right ones.
Sophomore Shaya Danesh said, “It was really helpful to meet with my counselor this year especially because Junior year is going to be a challenging year and it is going to be really important for me to pick the right classes that are going to help me with college and college applications.”
The choices that students make with the help of their counselors must be finalized by spring break in order to ensure that the counselors have enough time to organize all student’s choices.
Students who are still unsure with their choices by next year will have the option to drop a class or level down.
Students have the option to level up to harder classes by taking Honors weighted or AP classes if they are looking forward to having a deeper understanding on a specific subject or course.
However, the six-week dropping period at the beginning of next year will give students the chance to familiarize themselves with their new classes and decide whether or not they chose to stay in their classes or drop them.
