As prom season approaches in May, ASB coordinated a poll to see what prom theme upperclassmen would most prefer. This voting ended on March 3, and the theme has ultimately been decided to be La La Land.
The poll included a total of seven options, with an additional spot to come up with other ideas not on the list. Besides La La Land, the other options included Night Under the Stars, Lucky Nights, Romeo and Juliet, Big Apple (New York), Night in Paris and Masquerade.
Despite all of the potential prom themes being good options, La La Land had an overarching attraction from students. Also, La La Land has a diverse scenery and elements that bring more attention to it rather than the other themes.
Camilla Armendariz (11) says, “I can’t wait to see how ASB will plan the theme at the actual location. It’s also so ironic that this prom is in an observatory and La La Land was too, which matches really well.”
La La Land takes place in Hollywood with starry nights being a main factor in the surroundings. Romance is obviously a significant part of the movie as well. Because of this, it already has concepts that are included in other themes such as Night in Paris, With their Stars and Romeo and Juliet, with romance.
The atmosphere of the movie La La Land radiates a sense of nostalgia and joy. Its incorporation of vibrancy and color in the film was also a motivating factor to vote for it.
As spring comes around, many floral and colorful trends are spreading around which has reflected in people’s prom attire this year. The overall aura of La La Land is similar to these spring themes and will fit the mood of the event wonderfully.
Malak Youssef (11) shares, “I think this year’s theme really brings the fantasy to life. La La Land is one of my favorite films, and I think it will overall make the ambience more lively and entertaining.”
Since La La Land has spectacular visuals of a jazzy and nostalgic Hollywood night, it would create a wholesome scenery for seniors to look back on their last high school dance. The musicality in La La Land will hopefully be somewhat incorporated into the soundtrack at the dance as it easily lights up the mood for anyone.
Some students thought some of the potential themes were bland as well. New York (Big Apple) was one of the least commonly picked options this year. Another one was Lucky Nights, which did not catch the attention of many students due to its unpopularity.
Romeo and Juliet was favored by some students who liked the romantic aroma and wanted to see Shakespearan scenery translated to prom.
La La Land seems to be a suitable and lovable choice at this year’s prom at Aliso. Students are sure to look back at the memories they have made at prom and see it reflected in the vibrant and joyous atmosphere inspired by La La Land.
