On March 22, “Snow White” entered the theaters, and since then critics and fans have been in uproar about how awful the movie was.
Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot starred as Snow White and the Evil Queen, respectively, in the new live action remake of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
Three years before the movie even entered the theaters, there was already some controversy surrounding the film because of Zegler’s comments on the original plot line of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
In an interview with ExtraTV in October of 2022, Zegler says, “There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, so we didn’t do that this time. We have a different approach to what I’m sure a lot of people will assume is a love story just because, like, we cast a guy in the movie…But it’s really not about the love story at all, which is really, really wonderful.”
Many were shocked about her comments on the original film and how she was claiming the cartoon was “anti-feminist.” However, after watching the movie, the plot was not changed too much.
The romance aspect of the original cartoon is still present in the live action, but instead, the love interest is introduced towards the beginning of the film. In addition to that, Snow White has been with the love interest for most of the film before he must give her a true love’s kiss.
There are still many noticeable differences between the original film and the live action remake; however, the differences did not completely ruin the movie like viewers thought they would.
Another flaw that critics are highlighting is Gadot’s performance as the evil queen.
Melanie Fischer, a reporter for Pajiba, speaks about the absurd performance that Gadot gifted viewers: “To date, Gadot has been fortunate to benefit from a run of stoic characters that suit her default settings and highly charismatic co-stars. But Disney villains are built for camp, and that is clearly not something Gadot is capable of delivering, even bedazzled in rhinestones and glittery lipstick. Her singing inability, shoddily masked by autotune, is hardly unique among recent musicals (can we please bring back ghost singers?), but the awful acting is another matter entirely.”
Not only was Gadot’s acting disappointing, but her singing was beyond tragic. It made audiences cringe in their seats just waiting for her song, “All is Fair,” to end.
Currently, “Snow White” has a 48 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that is highly justified by many critics.
“‘Snow White’ is hardly a grumpy time at the movies thanks to Rachel Zegler’s luminous star turn, but its bashful treatment of the source material along with some dopey stylistic choices won’t make everyone happy, either,” reads the “Critic Consensus” on Rotten Tomoatoe’s website.
Overall, there were many audience members who wished they had never seen the movie once it was over. That is a tell-tell sign that the film,“Snow White,” was horrendous.
