The month of March marks Disability Awareness Month in the United States. This month is dedicated to recognizing the contributions, achievements and challenges that people with disabilities face. Across the United States, some schools, organizations and communities participate in events and other activities to help spread awareness and promote inclusion and accessibility for those with disabilities.
At Aliso Niguel High School, the official Instagram page @anhswolverines acknowledged the month with a post highlighting the importance of disability awareness. The post, shared on March 1, featured a message that the month of March would have a surprise lunchtime activity in support of disability awareness month.
At ANHS there is also a club known as the Best Buddies Club, which helps connect students with and without disabilities to build friendships and helps promote inclusion on school campuses.
The Best Buddies International states that its mission is to “…Create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 27 percent of adults in the U.S. have some type of disability, making it the largest minority group in the country.
The CDC states, “Disabilities can affect a person’s ability to see, hear, walk, communicate, learn, or perform other daily activities.”
Many people with disabilities still face significant challenges such as accessibility. Public spaces, workplaces and even schools are not fully equipped to accommodate people with mobility, visual or auditory impairments. This can limit their ability to travel independently, access resources or participate in everyday activities.
Employment opportunities also remain a significant issue for those with disabilities.
Many workplaces still lack necessary accommodation, making it difficult for disabled individuals to find jobs.
Another challenge that affects people with disabilities is societal stigma. People with disabilities are often met with misconceptions, limiting their opportunities for education, employment and social inclusion. Disability Awareness Month helps combat these stereotypes by helping to promote understanding and encouraging people to educate themselves on these stereotypes and how to break them.
Throughout the month of March, various national organizations work to educate the public on different disabilities and how to allow for a more inclusive environment for all. Some efforts often focus on advocating for policy changes, while others provide resources to help individuals and communities better understand accessibility needs and to be more inclusive.
Aliso Niguel High School recognizes Disability awareness month and allows for steps to be taken to help promote acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities. This helps ensure that all people, regardless of ability, are valued members of society.
