The season of spring is known for beautiful blooms of flowers, peaceful showers of rain and warmer weather finally coming back. Some may even claim that spring is the best season; but, believe it or not, spring is not as enjoyable as it seems.
Many high school students look forward to spring break; however, they cannot enjoy spring break due to studying for AP exams, tests right after break, mock exams that serve as finals before the actual AP exam and homework in general. Spring break is supposed to provide students the chance to get out of the house and do activities they would like to do during the springtime, but with so many academic obligations, they cannot truly enjoy their break away from school.
Spring also takes a large toll on people, whose allergies to pollen are very sensitive. Since the weather is getting warmer than it previously was, more plants are blooming, causing an increased release of pollen into the air and triggering seasonal allergies. Even outside of allergies, several people get sick especially during the springtime with unpredictable temperature patterns.
Natalie Teigiser (12) says, “I’ve been getting even more sick than usual ever since spring came along. Usually, I just have the occasional stuffy nose from the sudden weather changes, but lately, I’ve been getting even a sore throat on top of my stuffy and runny nose.”
More on fluctuating temperatures, the weather during spring gets too unpredictable. One day, the sun would be out throughout the whole day, reaching a UV index of seven and up to a temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the next day, there would be nonstop rain, making it difficult to do anything. With such unpredictable weather conditions, it gets difficult to do all spring activities one would like to do.
Unfortunately, simple weather changes during spring can fully impact people’s moods, which refers to the idea of “spring depression.”
According to Brown University’s Health Blog Team, “We have no control over the weather, so when the most obvious and inescapable change is occurring in the environment, we can feel lost and depressed. It is also theorized that allergens and toxins in the environment can aggravate anxiety through the inflammation.”
Although winter is typically associated with low emotional states, with cold and gloomy weather, even studies show that spring shows high levels of anxiety and depression. Without even knowing it, spring can sometimes be some of the most depressing time of people’s lives, which alongside often affects the people around them.
Spring is typically the time when student burnout and senioritis hits. Luckily, there is a week off school for spring recess; but one week is not enough time for some students to get themselves back on track. Such burnout leaves students drained with anything school related for the rest of the school year and are even unable to enjoy their lives outside of school.
Even though spring is often perceived as a beautiful season filled with colorful flowers and wonderful weather, it is not as enjoyable as it seems. Other seasons like summer and autumn offer so many pleasant opportunities without the consequences that spring brings, which contributes to why spring is an overrated season. Even more, spring can easily be a season to skip when given the chance.
