As the new softball season begins, the team is training hard for an exciting and competitive year. While there may be challenges to face up ahead, the team is eager to prove itself during the season and eventually, during league and CIF as well.
“I think we have a long way to go from where we are at now, but we have so much talent and grit that I think it will pull us through to winning some big games this year,” Olivia Kuhnel (12) shared. “I’m really excited to see how we compete in our league this year.”
Team Captain Kuhnel expresses that the biggest strengths of the team this season is their unity, respect and great team bond–all qualities that are crucial for their success. “We have grown so much in terms of team chemistry leading up to the season. I think we all truly respect each other and we’ve built up a sense of trust in everyone with how much we practice and bond.”
The team has been working hard in preparation, focusing not just on their physical game but also on their mental approach. Senior Captain Ella Haugo says, “We have been preparing by practicing a lot and working on our mental game”.
She also expresses her excitement for the upcoming season as she looks forward to playing alongside her closest friends for her final year.
The team is filled with talented players; some players to keep an eye out for are Junior Tessa Cowsill, Junior Evie Scherffius, Freshman Amanda Elkins and Senior Ella Haugo.
Haugo takes pride in playing first base and expresses that she loves to be “…involved in almost every play, and I love being able to catch for my teammates.” She is looking forward to facing off against rivals Mission Viejo and Tesoro, games that will be intense and thrilling.
Leadership plays a major role in shaping the team’s dynamic. Kuhnel has set high personal goals for herself to fulfill this leadership role. “My personal goals this season as a captain and a senior are to lead my teammates in a way that builds confidence within them all. I also want to make the most of my senior season by pitching in some big games this year and having more strikeouts.”
Many players have pre-game rituals among themselves that reflect the close relationship the team has. Olivia has a ritual with her teammate Charlotte Giler as they would “…always play catch the same way and throw a ball behind our backs before each game, so we’re really superstitious about it!”
The captain encourages the school, students and fans to come out and watch: “Softball is such a unique sport because you can really feel the passion that everyone has when they’re playing it. The games move fast and are so entertaining and fun—so come support us at our next home game!”
Not only will you enjoy the game, but you will also help become a massive support for the team. This season will be filled with memorable moments so be sure to keep an eye on the team as they give it their all!
