Students have begun to choose their classes for the upcoming school year. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors are meeting with their counselors to select their classes for the next year. There are quite a few options for students to select from.
English is a course that students have to take all 4 years. Upcoming sophomore students may choose to take regular English or Honors English II. While the honors course is obviously more difficult, it is manageable for most students.
Juniors have the option to take regular English III or AP Language and Composition. AP Language requires students to read and analyze non-fiction texts. Depending on the teacher as well, AP Language is a fairly easy class.
Maddy Denny (12) says, “I recommend that juniors take AP Language because it helps you write essays easily and improves your writing skills.”
Senior year is stressful and there is a lot going on with college applications and senior activities. To have an easier year, it is better to take regular English IV rather than AP Literature.
For math, it is recommended to take Geometry, regular Algebra and regular Pre-Calculus. The honors math classes are fairly difficult and there is a lot of content to learn.
If students are higher than that level of math, then it is recommended that more committed students take AP Statistics or AP Calculus AB, which are more difficult and have harder content. For students who don’t want to take a difficult math class in their junior or senior year, College Math or Personal Finance is a better option.
For science, all sophomores will take Chemistry. There is an option to take regular, honors or AP Chemistry. It is recommended to take Honors Chemistry, the teachers are good and the class isn’t too difficult. If students want to be a chemistry major for college, then AP Chemistry is a good class to take.
Although students don’t have to take a science class their junior or senior year, most colleges require students complete 3 years of science. Easy science classes to take would be Forensic Science or Biotechnology.
Andreanna Javing (12) says, “I would recommend taking Forensic Science. You get to do interesting labs and the teachers are really fun.”
For history, students have the option of taking either regular World History or AP European History their sophomore year. Taking World History is recommended because it is an easy, straightforward class and the material is easy to understand.
Junior year, students will choose either US History or AP US History. It is recommended to take AP US History because it is not a hard AP class and the content is not difficult to understand.
For upcoming seniors, it is highly recommended to take AP Government. It is an easier AP class. There is quite a bit of homework, but it is not hard. The class mostly consists of taking notes and there are only five tests for the whole year.
Most students will have to take electives to meet the minimum class requirement. Students should consider being in newspaper, ASB or Link Crew because it is important for students to get involved. Some other electives that are easy are culinary arts, AP Art History or a language.
Kendall Hwang (12) says, “I would recommend sophomores to take a Spanish class next year because it is an easier and stress-free elective that you take with your harder junior classes.”
It can be overwhelming choosing classes, especially so early in this school year. No matter what classes a student chooses to take, they will be successful with some hard work.
