As the new season kicks off, the Aliso Niguel High School girls’ swim team is ready to dive into competition with high hopes and fierce determination. The team is looking to build on past successes and make a splash in league competition.
The swim team is setting goals as it strives to build on last year’s progress. After finishing fourth in league last season, the team is determined to climb the rankings and secure a higher placement this year, with high hopes of making it to CIF relays.
Another major goal for the girls is to get their best times; with various veterans and swimmers new to the sport on the team, the nine seniors on the team are hoping to get their best times. The veterans are taking advantage of their last year at Aliso Niguel and making the best of their last season.
Preparation for the season has been intense, with the team committing to a rigorous preseason training schedule. Morning practices start at 5:45 a.m., an early grind that the swimmers tackle without complaint. The training regimen includes swimming drills, weightlifting, and medicine ball exercises, resulting in hours of training each day. The team’s dedication is evident, and their hard work is already showing results, where the majority of swimmers are expected to gain new personal records throughout the season.
Last year’s fourth-place finish in league was a solid performance, but the team is aiming higher this season. With increased speed, endurance, and a relentless training ethic, they are poised to challenge top competitors and make a push for a better standing. The focus remains on steady improvement, teamwork, and maintaining the discipline that has defined their training thus far.
Varsity player Maddie Roy (12) says, “We definitely have a more competitive team with many fast swimmers, so training has been more intense, but the team has definitely been more connected and motivated!”
A key factor to their success is building a strong team bond. The swimmers support and push each other in practice, creating a positive environment that motivates them. Having a close connection makes training more enjoyable and leads to better performances in competition.
Coach Cox says, “I think our team does a great job overall, but one thing we can work on is paying more attention to stroke technique instead of just swimming nonstop. Focusing on the techniques will help us improve.”
Coach Cox emphasizes proper stroke technique since it’s crucial for efficiency and speed in the water, helping swimmers conserve energy while maximizing performance. The hours of training ensure that each movement is as effective as possible. By honing in on technique, the swimmers aim to shave off valuable seconds from their times and gain a competitive edge in upcoming meets.
With their eyes set on success, the Aliso Niguel girls’ swim team is ready to embrace the challenges of the season. Whether it’s daily practice, intense meets, or pushing past personal limits, these athletes are determined to give it their all. As the first meets approach, the Aliso Niguel community can expect thrilling races, record-breaking times, and a team that leaves a lasting impression on the school.
