February, the month known for aspects of love, togetherness and most importantly cinema.
While many focus their month on Valentine’s Day dates and going out, others would much rather enjoy romantic-comedy films to connect to the day. Love-stories hold many different meanings, plots and twists.
With the holiday of love just around the corner, it’s important to acknowledge some of the best.
“To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” is a popular trilogy created by Jenny Han in 2018. The story follows junior, Lara-Jean, when secret love letters she had written to all the boys she’s loved before had been sent out without her knowledge.
With many ups and downs, the film has heartwarming and heartbreaking scenes that leave all hopeless romantics on the edge of their seats; making it such a memorable movie.
Kayana Coachman (11) shares, “It perfectly captures the pure, sweet and innocent teenage love. It has funny, and lovable characters who create scenes that make everyone laugh, cry and come together to watch this beautiful love story unfold.”
“La La Land,” directed by Damian Chezelle, is a musical rom-com, with an artistic twist. It focuses on the two protagonists, Mia and Sebastian, as they deal with the hardships of trying to live out dreams in a realistic world. With musical numbers, vibrant colors and heartbreak, the film will leave viewers with a changed perspective on love and all that follows it.
“27 Dresses,” is an early 2000’s romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl and James Marsden, and directed by Anne Fletcher. The film reaches out to all hopeless romantics out there who seem to always help others in love, yet have none for themselves. Heigl’s character is forced to reflect on her single-spent life, when Marsden’s reporter character encounters 27 dresses symbolizing all weddings she has been a part of that weren’t hers.
The film is a classic enemies-to-lovers trope and the characters capture audiences’ hearts in a glimpse of a moment.
“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” directed by Donald Petrie is a romantic comedy classic, starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. The plot follows a news reporter and salesman on the hunt to do two opposing things: Lose a guy in 10 days and make a girl fall in love in 10 days.
The odds of the world put these two unlikely couples together for a week of non-stop ups and downs, with an audience having to deal with all the emotions. With iconic lines and outfits, the film is perfect for any girl or guy.
Kate Jameson (11) adds “Personally, soundtracks always stand out to me. The soundtracks always fit the movie perfectly and give a sense of fulfillment, especially during the first kiss moments.”
Romantic comedies hold special places in everyone’s hearts. Whether it is hopelessness, endearing or outright loathing, these movies impact many.
While many can admire the Valentine’s Day holiday with a date, those unable to participate can live vicariously through these films, making this romantic day as memorable for them as well.
