Aliso Niguel’s Laura’s House club spreads awareness about domestic violence and supports victims in our community.
Laura’s House is a women’s shelter and support group for women affected by domestic violence. The shelter was created by a woman named Laura who was a victim of domestic violence.
Unfortunately, Laura’s story ended tragically, but when the creators of South Orange County Domestic Violence Action Committee heard that she had no one to turn to when she was being abused, they finished creating Laura’s House in honor of Laura.
According to www.laurashouse.org, “Laura’s House provides residential shelter services, transitional housing, counseling and workshops, and legal services to thousands of individuals. Over 3,000 crisis calls come in each year on our 24/7 Crisis Hotline.”
Here at Aliso, students have created the Laura’s House club so that students can become more aware of the effects of domestic violence and acknowledge the resources out there than can assist them.
In addition to this, the students volunteer in order to contribute to the cause and educate members about domestic violence.
President Liliana Kopf (12) says, “Our goal with the Laura’s House club is to raise awareness about domestic violence and support the work they are doing in our community. Laura’s House does so much to help survivors of abuse by offering shelter, legal support and even counseling.”
By getting involved at school, students can help raise funds or volunteer to help prevent domestic abuse in the future and prepare victims on where they can go if they need help.
Meetings are held every first Monday of the month in Mr. Skinner’s room, room 709. During these meetings, members discuss volunteer opportunities, educate members on different forms of domestic abuse and recognize where you can go to get help and brainstorm ways they can raise money for Laura’s House.
“I would definitely recommend that students join this club because it is a great way to make a real difference in our community,” says Kopf.
There are many great clubs at Aliso Niguel, but Laura’s House stands out due to its active members, educating aspects and desire to help our community.
